🌍 World Cleanup Day

This Sunday, 20 September people around the world will come together for World Cleanup Day.

The movement began in Estonia in 2008, when more than 50,000 people joined the Teeme Ära! clean-up initiative. Since then, it has grown into a global movement for a cleaner planet.

Here in Australia, you can take part through the Big Butt Hunt, with events taking place across the country. Find an event near you and register https://nomorebutts.org/big-butt-hunt -0a27-40aa-9fcd-5aa45a86a607

If you are in Canberra this Sunday, the Embassy of Estonia will be joining the clean-up at Lake Ginninderra, Belconnen hosted by OzFish Unlimited.

Come along and be part of a cleaner world! 🌏💚

The Embassy of Estonia in Canberra was pleased to welcome students from the University of Technology Sydney’s Society of International Diplomacy and Domestic Affairs (SIDDA) as part of their Embassy Tour.

During the visit, we introduced Estonia as a small but internationally active country and discussed some of the key areas that have shaped Estonia’s story.

We also spoke about Estonia’s foreign policy, the work of our Embassy in Australia and the role embassies play in strengthening relations between countries, supporting citizens and promoting political, economic and cultural ties.

⚠️ Juhime Tähelepanu! Austraalia siseministeerium on teatanud, et Working Holiday viisade (subclass 417) menetlusajad on pikenenud nende taotluste puhul, mis on esitatud väljaspool Austraaliat (offshore), enamasti puudutab see esmakordseid taotlejaid ning menetlusaeg võib praegu ulatuda mitme kuuni. Hetkel menetletakse eelisjärjekorras korduvaid ehk teise või kolmanda aasta Working Holiday viisa taotlusi, mille on esitanud inimesed, kes viibivad juba Austraalias. Seetõttu soovitatakse taotlejatel, kes viibivad väljaspool Austraaliat mitte teha tühistamatuid reisiplaane ega osta lennupileteid enne, kui viisa väljastamine on kinnitatud.

Lisainfo ja ajakohased menetlusajad leiate Austraalia Siseministeeriumi ametlikult veebilehelt: https://immi.homeaffairs.gov.au/visas/getting-a-visa/visa-listing/work-holiday-417

Eesti saatkond Austraalias saab antud teemal vahendada üksnes Austraalia ametiasutuste avaldatud ametlikku teavet.

Estonian education continues to rank among the very best in Europe and the world! 🇪🇪🎓

The latest results from the PISA 2025 education study once again confirm the high standard of Estonia’s education system. This year’s assessment focused primarily on science, where Estonian students ranked 1st in Europe and 6th in the world.

But a strong education system is about much more than a place in an international ranking. For a small country like Estonia, knowledge, skills and critical thinking are among our greatest strengths. In a world shaped by rapidly developing technology, increasing international competition and growing security challenges, a strong education system helps Estonia remain resilient, competitive and well prepared for the future.

Hello all!

The new academic year in Estonia begins with exciting news: The Estonian Worldwide Youth Network opens its autumn youth delegate programme!

Apply to become a ÜENV youth delegate no later than 03.09.2026 and let's make the voices of Estonian youth around the world heard together!

The purpose of the youth delegate role is to represent the perspectives and interests of Estonian youth abroad in their country of residence and to support communication between young people around the world. We are looking for active young people aged 16 - 35 who are ready to contribute approximately five hours per month between September and January to help strengthen the connection between local and global Estonian youth.

The task of the youth delegate is to create and maintain social contacts between young people and act as a communication point between Estonian youth abroad and local Estonian society.

The role of the Youth Delegate includes three main areas:
- Social media or written media communication - sharing information and your own activities and reaching young people in the channels where they operate on a daily basis.
- Representing the voice of your community - making the needs, activities and initiatives of local youth visible.
- Creating a connection point between young people - promoting contacts, opportunities and cooperation between young people from different communities.

There will be two programmes to choose from:
Estonian-based programme (meetings are lined with EU / US timezones) and English-based programme (meetings are better suited for AUS/NZ timezones).

The delegates will be in a shared WhatsApp group and have monthly meetings.

Share the call on social media with your friends on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/p/Db8q_jaioSq/?igsi=MTZzNzhyNHp2cnNoMw==

At a reception hosted by the Latvijas vēstniecība Austrālijā / Embassy of Latvia in Australia yesterday, our charge d’affaires Kristjan Kuurme spoke alongside the ambassadors of Latvia and Lithuania in front of colleagues from Australian Government Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Defence Australia, the three embassies and representatives of Baltic communities to celebrate 35 years of diplomatic relations between Australia and 🇪🇪, 🇱🇻 and 🇱🇹.

Kristjan noted: “From the halls of the UN in New York to the watermelon patch in Bundaberg, our distant countries are connected by our values: respect for the rules of the road, belief in the value of hard work and a quiet determination to get the job done — without too much fuss, with a healthy dose of common sense and good humor.”

May the years to come bring even more friendship, success and prosperity to our countries and our people. To the next 35!🥂

This Sunday in Canberra, Chargé d’Affaires Kristjan Kuurme joined the Ambassadors of Lithuania and Latvia to Australia in commemorating 37 years since the Baltic Way / Balti kett.

The Baltic Way was a remarkable display of unity and solidarity, rejecting the secret protocols of the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact, which 50 years earlier sought to carve Europe into zones of influence. The people in the chain on 23 August 1989, connecting the 3 Baltic capitals (a distance spanning nearly 700km, Canberra to Melbourne!) had no way of knowing the Soviet Union will collapse a mere 2 years later.

As Europe faces similar challenges to sovereignty and inviolability of borders today, our unwavering and unequivocal support for Ukraine remains paramount. In the words of one of the voices of the Singing Revolution, Heinz Valk: "Ükskord me võidame niikuinii" or "One day, no matter what, we will win!".

Thank you to the members of the local Baltic communities who came together to mark this important occasion. 🇪🇪🇱🇻🇱🇹🇦🇺

35 years ago today, Estonia restored its independence.

Under the determined leadership of then-Foreign Minister Lennart Meri, Estonia’s foreign service quickly expanded our presence around the world, helping re-establish Estonia’s place in the international community.

Over three decades of persistent diplomacy, dedicated public service, and strong partnerships around the world, Estonia has shown remarkable courage in turning the promise of independence into a lasting achievement.

Here’s to making a free and democratic Estonia shine around the world for generations to come
