Nearly 1,000 wallabies, kangaroos and their joeys were killed across Mulligans Flat “Sanctuary” and the adjoining Goorooyaroo Nature Reserve.

344 wallabies were killed, along with 156 joeys killed by blunt force trauma. Of these, 58 wallabies and 33 joeys were killed at Goorooyaroo Nature Reserve, with the remainder killed at Mulligans Flat. 367 kangaroos were also killed, along with 115 joeys killed by blunt force trauma.

That is 982 lives taken.

Kangaroos and wallabies have adapted their breeding in response to environmental conditions and available resources over millions of years. Yet at Mulligans Flat, they live within a human-created fenced landscape where their natural movement and dispersal are restricted - and are then labelled “overabundant” to justify killing them.

Wallabies and kangaroos are not an excess simply because humans have drawn a fence around their habitat and decided how many are permitted to live within it.

Even more disturbingly, fertility control is already being used at Mulligans Flat — yet killing continues.

A sanctuary should protect all animals who call it home, not selectively decide which species are valued and which are controlled and killed.

We count livestock losses after natural disasters. Why aren’t we counting the wildlife killed alongside them?

24 June 2026, Environment, energy & climate: Honorary Professor George Wilson from the The Australian National University Fenner School of Environment and Society argues that Australia’s disaster reporting is missing a crucial part of the picture.

Kangaroos and other native animals share the same landscapes as sheep and cattle and are exposed to the same fires, floods and droughts. Yet while livestock deaths are documented, wildlife losses are rarely measured systematically.

Professor Wilson warns that this lack of data can distort our understanding of wildlife populations and weaken recovery planning and management decisions. He proposes using existing aerial surveys, remote sensing and citizen science to estimate wildlife deaths and report them alongside livestock losses.

Governments cannot claim to practise evidence-based wildlife management while ignoring the animals lost to increasingly severe natural disasters, especially when setting quotas that permit more animals to be killed.

5,352 native animals. Gone! 💔
THIS MUST STOP!

The ACT Government’s recent cull resulted in the deaths of 5,352 native animals including:

• 3,562 kangaroos
• 1,290 kangaroo joeys
• 344 wallabies
• 156 wallaby joeys

Every single number represents a living, sentient animal: mothers. Babies. Families. Lives cut short.

And for what? We keep repeating the same cycle of killing, year after year, instead of putting serious effort into finding humane, evidence-based ways for people and wildlife to coexist.

There are better options. We should be investing in them.

Take action today and tell your Minister: the killing of our native wildlife must end!
