Spring has sprung 🌻🌼🌷 and the change of season can bring an increase in pollen and air pollution. Employers must manage the risks from air pollution at work, such as pollen, smoke and dusts as much as they reasonably can.

Consulting workers is an important part of managing these risks. Some workers may have pre-existing conditions, such as asthma or other respiratory conditions that make them more sensitive to air pollution.

Workers’ compensation stigma can make it hard for injured or ill workers to get the support they need at work.

Employers must have insurance called workers’ compensation to cover their workers in case they get sick or injured at work. But when a worker seeks compensation, they can experience stigma.

This can make it harder for someone to seek the support they need. They may be less likely to report an injury or illness, make a claim or get the most out of recovery and return to work process.

As an employer, there are practical steps you can take to reduce workers’ compensation stigma in your workplace.

New data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics is providing valuable insights on work health and safety in Australian businesses 📊

The Business Characteristics Survey shows that businesses that are innovative are more likely to review their workplace safety practices.

These insights help us understand workplace safety trends so we can improve WHS outcomes across Australia.

⚠️ Sales and service workers, including those in hospitality, food trades and retail, are more likely to be young or in insecure jobs than workers in other occupations.

Our sales and service workers WHS profile also found:
💠Body stressing accounts for 41% of all serious claims, compared to 37% across all occupations. More than half of these injuries are linked to muscular stress while lifting, carrying or handling objects.
💠Serious mental health condition claims occur less frequently than physical injuries, but when they do occur, they result in longer recovery times and higher median compensation costs.
💠Sales and service workers are more likely than those in other occupations to be exposed to harmful behaviours at work, such as bullying, violence and aggression, further impacting their health, safety and wellbeing.
