💡 Ever wondered how much Australia’s broadacre farmland is worth?

In its latest update, ABARES Farmland Price Indicator estimates Australian broadacre farmland to be valued at $1.48 trillion – up from last year’s estimate of $1.2 trillion.

That’s equivalent to 1.38 million residential dwellings, which is more than the entire number of residential dwellings in Western Australia, or 1-in-8 of all residential dwellings in Australia.

ABARES Outlook 2026 is off to a flying start!

Dr Máximo Torero unpacked the global forces shaping food systems – from market volatility to climate pressures – and what they mean for Australia’s agriculture, fisheries and forestry sectors.

The latest ABARES forecasts released today reveal Australian agriculture will hit an historic high of $101.4 billion in production value this financial year before easing in 2026-27.

Combined agriculture, fisheries and forestry value is forecast to reach $107.4 billion in 2025-26 – also a record – underscoring the strength of our primary industries.

Agricultural export value is forecast to rise to $80.5 billion in 2025–26 ($84.8 billion including fisheries and forestry) reflecting higher crop export volumes and higher overall livestock and livestock product export prices.

Growers are also on track to deliver the second largest winter crop on record, with timely rainfall and mild spring temperatures supporting strong yields – despite below average growing season rainfall in 2025-26 across many cropping regions in southeast Australia.

ABARES is forecasting 2026-27 crop production and prices to soften as seasonal conditions become less favourable and prices in global markets for many crops decline. Market access challenges and uncertainty over recent trade announcements will also weigh on export prices for livestock.
