The National Missing Persons Coordination Centre (NMPCC) is a non-operational arm of the Australian Federal Police (AFP) and was established in 2006 to drive national coordination in response to missing persons in Australia, and to complement the investigative role of State and Territory police. Its mandate is to reduce the incidence and impact of missing persons in Australia. The NMPCC is the host of the national register of long-term missing persons. As part of its mandate, the Centre also works to educate the Australian community and raise awareness of the issues and impacts of missing persons in Australia; particularly vulnerable groups at risk of going missing. This is done through campaigns and programs such as National Missing Persons Week, proactive media engagement, and education initiatives such as Day for Daniel (Morcombe).

Kay Docherty, then aged 16, was last seen on 27 July 1979 around 7.30pm in the company of Toni Cavanagh, then aged 15 (also missing). Both girls left their homes and did not return. Kay told her parents she was staying at Toni's house, and Toni told her family they were going to the movies with Kay's aunt and uncle. There was a sighting of the two at Bulli Tops shortly afterwards. It's believed the girls were on their way to the Wollongong CBD to attend a disco, but it's not known whether they ever made it.

Both girls were reported missing to the police on Sunday 29th July. The following week, Toni and Kay's families received separate letters from the pair posted from the Kings Cross area, saying they were staying with friends and would be home soon.

There have been no confirmed sightings of the girls since they were seen at a Bulli Tops bus stop at dusk on the evening of Friday 27, although there was an unconfirmed sighting in Queensland in 1984.

There are grave concerns for the safety and welfare of the girls.
A reward of $100,000 is offered for information to solve the double disappearance.

DNA is a unique genetic blueprint found in almost every cell of the body. In forensic investigations, it plays a critical role in identifying unidentified human remains (UHR) and supporting long term missing persons investigations.

To make a DNA comparison, investigators use two types of reference samples:

• Direct reference samples: collected from the missing person’s own biological material or personal items.

• Family reference samples: collected from relatives through a cheek swab to help establish genetic connections.

Locating unknown human remains (UHR)

As part of the investigation into the identity of UHR, biological material usually a blood, bone or tooth sample are collected during a postmortem examination.

The DNA extracted from these samples can assist in determining biological s*x, identifying genetic relationships to family members of missing persons through database searches.

In missing persons investigations, DNA specialists use several techniques to compare missing person reference samples to (UHR). Specialists analyse nuclear and/or mitochondrial DNA from UHR to create DNA profiles, which are uploaded to the National Integrated Forensic Analysis (NIFA) system.

Profiles are also developed from direct or family reference samples and uploaded to support comparisons between UHR and missing persons—or their relatives.

DNA analysis remains one of the most effective tools for providing answers, supporting investigations, and helping families find closure.

Lawrence had previously lived in Randwick, Sydney, before returning home to care for his mother, and was known to frequent the Cessnock, Aberdare and surrounding areas. More than 40 years on, his disappearance continues to leave many unanswered questions for those who knew and loved him.

In July 2007 six-year-old Leela and her mother 27-year-old Chantelle McDougall along with two other men vacated their premises in Nannup, Western Australia.

From all indications, they were moving to Brazil and possibly traveling via New Zealand, but enquiries since this time have failed to establish their departure from Australia.

Extensive enquiries have failed to locate Leela McDougall and there are concerns for her safety and welfare.

R U OK? Day reminds us of the importance of connection, compassion and checking in with the people around us.

Research shows that people experiencing mental health challenges, emotional distress or difficulties coping with life can be at greater risk of going missing. Feelings of uncertainty, isolation, frustration, or not knowing where to turn for support can contribute to a person disengaging from those around them or disappearing from their usual routines.

A simple conversation won't solve every problem, but it can be a powerful reminder that someone is seen, heard and supported. Asking "R U OK?" can help create space for people to talk about what they're going through and connect them with support when they need it most.

Today, we also acknowledge the families and loved ones of missing persons. For many, the uncertainty and unanswered questions that accompany a disappearance can have a profound and lasting impact. Reaching out, checking in and offering support can make a meaningful difference to those carrying that burden.

This R U OK? Day, let's remember that asking the question isn't about having the perfect response. It's about showing up with empathy, listening without judgement, and reminding someone that they don't have to face life's challenges alone.

Nathan McLaughlin is believed to have left his home residence in Moil, Northern Territory, either on the evening of 17 March 1994, or early the next morning.

He was riding a grey/silver/black racing bike and wearing shorts, T-shirt and thongs. He is also believed to have been carrying or wearing a long sleeved American army camouflage jacket.

Nathan's bike was later found in the area of Secret Road, Berrimah.

Zedric Basil Woolley is a much loved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather who has been missing since 2012.

He is remembered as being happiest when surrounded by the people he loves and caring for his loving wife, Pauline. Sharing stories. Lending a helping hand. Working in the garden. Painting just about anything he can. Attending the Huon cattle sales. Watching football at Huonville.

These are just some of the memories Zedric's family hold close every day.

His family still smile when they remember his favourite sayings:

"See you in the soup, you bring the peas!"

"Got to get home before the possums come out."

And whenever someone says, "Here they are," they still find themselves looking around, just as they always did when Zedric said it.

This Father's Day, Zedric's family want to remind people that he is more than a missing person's case. He is a deeply loved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather whose absence is felt every day.

They continue to hold onto hope, cherish his memory and search for answers.

"Dad/Pop, we love you. We miss you. We think about you every day, and we will never stop searching for answers."
