Help Keep Backpackers Coming to Regional WA

The Shire of Victoria Plains is proud to support the Council WA's campaign to retain longer stay Tourist and Working Holiday Maker visas, which are currently being considered for reduction as part of Federal Government migration reforms.

Backpackers and those on working holiday visas play an important role in regional communities like ours. They contribute to local businesses, support critical workforce needs across sectors including agriculture, hospitality and tourism, and spend money in local economies while travelling throughout regional Western Australia. Reducing the number or length of these visas could have significant impacts on regional communities, businesses and industries that rely on this workforce and visitor market.

We encourage residents, businesses and community members to support Tourism Council WA's campaign and help ensure this important visitor and workforce stream remains available to regional Western Australia.

NOMINATE YOUR 2027 COMMUNITY CITIZEN OF THE YEAR
Recognise someone who goes above and beyond in our community.
It’s time to start thinking about those who are doing amazing things in our local community!
The Community Citizen of the Year Awards give us the opportunity to celebrate the positive impact of individuals, groups and events who are engaged and committed to our local community. Whether they are a nominee or recipient, we can all celebrate their outstanding contribution, because we’re all part of the story.
Recognising local heroes for more than 20 years, the Awards are made up of four categories:
· Community Citizen of the Year (for individuals over 16 years)
· Young Community Citizen of the Year (for individuals aged 16-30 years)
· Senior Community Citizen of the Year (for individuals aged 65 years and over)
· Active Citizenship (for community groups or events)
Nominations can be made for contributions to education, health, fundraising, voluntary services, business, sports, arts, culture, the environment, social inclusion or any other area that enhances the wellbeing of our community.

The Bob Hawke Landcare Award

Overview
This program aims to publicly recognise an individual, group or organisation that has been involved in championing landcare and inspiring others to take action on their property or in their community. It acknowledges the remarkable commitment to improving land and natural asset management, and promotional efforts to share their knowledge and support others.
An award package worth $30,000 (excluding GST) is available to the winner. The prize includes a travel package to attend the National Landcare Awards gala dinner for the award ceremony.
If applicants are making a nomination for an individual, group or organisation, they can only nominate them once. They can make more than one nomination, but this must be for another individual, group or organisation.
The award will be presented at the 2027 National Landcare Awards gala dinner on 7 September in Adelaide.

Main Assessment Criteria
The main assessment criteria include whether an individual demonstrates the following qualities:
1. Landcare champion
• Actively involved in landcare.
• Shows a remarkable commitment to caring for the land.
• Has an outstanding commitment to local communities and drives community activity for the benefit of the environment and landcare.
2. Remarkable leader
• Inspires, educates and encourages others to take action on their own properties or through a landcare group.
• Champions the uptake of more sustainable agricultural practices and can demonstrate the adoption of improved practices among landholders as a consequence of this action.
3. Sustainable farm practice innovator
• Actively pursues, introduces and shapes innovative farming systems to improve productivity, profitability, sustainability, and the quality of natural resources.
Restrictions
No self-nomination. Nominations can only be made by a third party.
