Two days after the far-too-close call of Saturday's bushfire, we are safe and open for business as usual. We will stay vigilant while the fireground just outside our fence-line continues to smoulder, but RFS has reassured us we are safe after they brought in drones to check the fireground and find any hot spots. We cannot thank everyone enough. The RFS who saved our sanctuary - we wouldn't be here, now, without you. Our team who readied our fire defences in 32 degree heat then stayed awake to watch through the night, alert for ember attacks. Our community who stood with us, as always. Thank you!

BUSHFIRE UPDATE: The pressure is off, our team taking time-out to be silly at sunset. We had just got the news. Everyone is safe. RFS posted that they have the Calga fire fully controlled. The fire crews will stay on the firefield tonight continuing containment work. Thankyou everyone who was standing by in case our animals needed you. We can all sleep safe tonight.

BUSHFIRE THREAT UPDATE
Sending love and prayers out to our neighbours who are also under threat from this fire here in Calga. And sending so much love and gratitude to the RFS firies and the water-bomber helicopter pilots and the police doing traffic control, doing an extraordinary job fighting this fire.

Our wildlife sanctuary has been under threat from a bushfire just meters from our boundary fence since lunchtime today. At 4pm I was live on ABC News when they told us the fire had been downgraded from "Watch-and-Act" to "Advice". But we didn't stand down. We know we have to stay vigilant until it is completely out.

Then a new spot-fire took hold near our other boundary fence at around 5pm.

The helicopters have had to stop flying because it is getting dark, but they have done an amazing job this afternoon. I can see around 10 fire-trucks, and there are more further up the road. They have Peats Ridge Road blocked off at our Darkinjung Rd turnoff.

The promised rain didn't happen. It sneaked past us just teasing us with a few useless drops.

Our team is onsite and watching for spot-fires. Our fire-fighting equipment is laid out ready for us to defend our animals if the fire gets into our sanctuary.

We should be ok, but its too early to be sure. It's going to be a long night.

A very quick Calga bush-fire update "WATCH AND ACT"
There is a fire very close to us (within 1km).
Helicopters and fire trucks are in attendance.
RFS is throwing all their resources at it.
Peats Ridge Road is closed, both for safety and to ensure the fire trucks have unobstructed access.
We have evacuated all visitors.
Our staff are on site and readying all our fire-defences to protect our animals.
After our 2019 evacuation, we have invested in great fire defences to keep our animals safe.
If the fire threat becomes too great, we will evacuated staff, we will not put people's lives at risk.
We are relieved that the next two days are forecast to be cool.
Thanks for caring!
Tassin

A huge thank you to all the volunteers across Australia for giving your time to help make our country a better place. And a special mention to all of our volunteers who help care for our animals ... cleaning enclosures, repairing fences, preparing food and feeding our loved ones here at Walkabout Wildlife Sanctuary.
