North West NSW is home to a diverse range of native plants, animals and landscapes, from the woodlands and grasslands of the inland plains to important rivers, wetlands and mountain habitats. Species such as the koala, superb parrot and regent honeyeater rely on healthy ecosystems to survive.

While many species face challenges, there is hope. Across our region, communities, landholders, conservation groups, Traditional Custodians and volunteers are working together to protect and restore habitats for native wildlife.

The good news is that you can make a difference, too. Small actions in your own backyard and neighbourhood can help create healthier habitats and support the recovery of threatened species.

🌿 Learn about the native animals, plants and ecosystems around your home and discover ways to support them with food, water and shelter.

🐾 Encourage your kids to connect with nature and develop a lifelong appreciation for wildlife.

🌱 Plant a native shrub or tree to provide habitat and food for local species.

🗑️ Dispose of rubbish responsibly to help keep habitats clean and safe.

🐕 Be a responsible pet owner and help protect native wildlife.

Every positive action, no matter how small, contributes to a brighter future for our unique wildlife. Together, we can help ensure our native species continue to thrive for generations to come. 💚🐨🌿

North West Local Land Services is assisting the DPIRD entomology team to conduct surveillance for Helicoverpa armigera and Helicoverpa punctigera moths - crucial to supporting the regions cropping industry.

Bucket traps that contain attractant lures specific to each species have been set up in 3 locations across the Lower Namoi and Gwydir irrigation valleys.

The traps are being checked weekly until the end of October.

Helicoverpa armigera and Helicoverpa punctigera moths caught in the bucket traps are being counted and supplied to entomologist Dr. Zorica Duric.

This information is valuable to growers of winter pulses and cotton. Helicoverpa armigera and Helicoverpa punctigera differ in resistance to insecticides due to their different overwintering habits.

The percentage of Helicoverpa armigera and Helicoverpa punctigera in the population affect the insecticides that growers can use to control this pest in their crops. Spray failures can occur if the wrong insecticide is used.
