A huge thank you to the communities of Weipa, Aurukun, Napranum and Mapoon for welcoming the Senior Legal and Social Support Service (SLASSS) team during our recent visit.
It was a privilege to spend time with older people, Elders, families, and community members, listening to their stories, sharing information, and having meaningful conversations about the challenges and strengths within their communities.
Our older people hold invaluable knowledge, culture and wisdom, and we are grateful for the opportunity to connect, learn and support them. Through these visits, we aim to ensure older people have access to information and support around elder abuse, scams, financial wellbeing, future planning, housing, aged care, and other legal and social issues.
Thank you to everyone who took the time to yarn with us, share their experiences, and welcome us into your communities. We look forward to continuing to work alongside and advocate for older people across Cape York.

Today is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. The theme this year is 'Beyond awareness: Making elder abuse prevention work'.

According to Age Discrimination Commissioner Robert Fitzgerald, 'Prevention involves taking early action, making informed decisions and putting strong protections in place. It also means recognising that dignity is inherent to all older people, and respecting their rights, choices and aspirations.’

A huge thank you to the team at TSIMA Radio on Thursday Island for inviting the CCLC team to speak this week. We loved meeting the team and having the opportunity to share more about what the Senior Legal and Social Support Service does for the community.

It was also a privilege to help raise awareness and educate the community during Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month. Thank you for giving us a platform to connect, yarn, and share important information with the Torres Strait communities.

The Seniors Legal and Social Support Service team from Cairns Community Legal Centre is heading back to Thursday Island and the NPA from next week (11-15 May 2026).

We’re really looking forward to being back in the community — meeting new people, catching up with familiar faces, and providing support where it’s needed.
