Major works are underway at the Bayview and Brinsmead reservoirs to strengthen water storage capacity ahead of the next wet season.

The reservoirs were taken offline in mid-2024 for maintenance and refurbishment which uncovered deterioration to the roofs that requires full replacements.

Contractors are now onsite at the Bayview and Brinsmead reservoirs, undertaking the $24 million project to remove and replace the roofs on both structures and complete relining prior to recommissioning.

This is not a drill: Big boy Hannibal is OPEN.

'Hannibal' is Cairns' largest Titan Arum and is more than two decades old, sitting proudly at approximately 2.7 metres tall.

The bloom is expected to last 24-48 hours at the Cairns Botanic Gardens.

We're proud to be a Reef Guardian Council, keeping the Great Barrier Reef clean and healthy, and take care of this special place we call home every day.

๐ŸšฎTogether with local Indigenous Land and Sea Ranger groups, we have removed 10ha of weeds and 9.4 tonnes of rubbish from local creeks and waterways.

๐ŸŒฑWe're restoring and strengthening coastal dunes to reduce erosion.

๐Ÿ’งWeโ€™re managing land-based run-off from our roads, drains, and catchments to minimise discharge to the Reef.

๐ŸšฝOur sewerage/wastewater treatment technology reduces nutrients flowing to local waterways and the Reef.

In 2026, we were encouraged by the theme โ€œALL IN for Reconciliation" by working together to plan a team activity that was meaningful to staff and their work.

Teams across Council have deepened their engagement with reconciliation over the past week through activities including creative workshops, bushtucker experiences, lunch and learn events, trivia, yarning circles, and more.

NRW is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation.

This yearโ€™s theme is a reminder that reconciliation is not a spectator sport. We can all learn, build relationships, and take action to advance reconciliation in our workplaces and our communities.
