🚫 The Trifecta of Non-Compliance! 🚫

Today's adventure of CSA's crew found the Trifecta!

Three different alarms — one big problem. Each of these had the 240v supply capped off in the ceiling and a 3v battery alarm installed over the top.

❌ This setup is non-compliant,
⚖️ against Queensland smoke alarm legislation, and
💸 could likely impact your insurance in the event of a claim.

240v (hardwired) smoke alarms must be replaced with new 240v units — not disconnected and swapped for battery alarms.

💡 Always use a licensed electrician for any electrical work.

🚫 Another day, another wiring disaster
⚡🔥💸 DIY or not, it's ended up with money up in smoke!

We were called out to inspect a faulty alarm - and this is what we discovered. The active wire (240v mains power) had been connected to the interconnection terminal (9v DC low-voltage), and the IC wire connected to the active.

This mistake overloaded the 9v DC low-voltage IC circuit, completely destroying the alarm.

Even worse - the fault sent 240v power through the 9v DC IC, making every connected alarm live ⚡ and posing a serious electrical and fire hazard 🔥, potentially destroying every hardwired alarm in the circuit💸.

To be clear - this wiring was not done by our team. It’s another reminder that smoke alarm wiring should only ever be handled by a licensed electrician.

🚫 DIY Gone Wrong! 🚫

Here’s another example of what not to do when it comes to your home’s smoke alarms. The Queensland Smoke Alarm Legislation is very clear — all existing 240v (hardwired) smoke alarms MUST be replaced with new 240v alarms.

❌ Simply cutting the wires, capping them off, and installing a 3v battery-operated alarm instead is NOT compliant and does not meet current safety standards.

⚡ We also want to remind everyone that it is both unsafe and unlawful for unqualified persons to carry out electrical work. Always ensure a licensed electrician installs or replaces your 240v smoke alarms.
