I recently attended an event organised by Study Cairns, an organisation that plays an active role in supporting education-related businesses and international student engagement in the region.
It gave me a great opportunity to get a sense of the energy and momentum behind Indonesia-Australia educational exchange - something as a diplomat, I have had close connections to throughout much of my career.
I also had the chance to speak Indonesian for the first time in a while. It was a good reminder of Australia's importance as a nation deeply connected to and engaged with the Indo-Pacific.
Consul, Shingo Higashimoto

This year marks two historically significant milestones in the Japan-Australia relationship: the 50th Anniversary of the Signing of the Basic Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation — the NARA Treaty — and the 130th Anniversary of the establishment of Japan's first Diplomatic Mission in Australia, in Townsville. These milestones remind us of the remarkable breadth and depth of our shared history.

In honour of these two historic milestones and in celebration of a gathering of the Parliamentary Friends of Japan Group, on June 2nd, I participated in an event hosted by the Consul-General of Japan in Brisbane, at Parliament Hall in Brisbane.

In attendance, were the Honourable Premier of Queensland, former Australia-Japan Parliamentary Friendship Group Chair the Hon. Warren Entsch, and over sixty Members of Parliament, as well as representatives of the Japan Queensland Chamber of Commerce and Japanese community — making for a wonderfully vibrant occasion.

For my own part, in addition to meeting with the Honourable Premier of Queensland, I was particularly glad to have had the chance to meet with the Mayor of Cairns and a number of Queensland State MPs who play active roles in Far North Queensland (FNQ). It was a genuinely valuable opportunity to strengthen vital regional, economic and cultural ties. - Consul, Shingo Higashimoto.

On May 13, I had the privilege of delivering opening remarks at a Far North Queensland (FNQ) teaching development conference for Japanese language educators, supported by the Japan Foundation🇯🇵🇦🇺.

Special recognition goes to Coordinator Michelle Young for her outstanding efforts in organising the event, including the conference program, logistics and facilitation of the discussion agenda👩‍🏫. The strong attendance of dedicated teachers, despite the conference taking place on a weekday, was both impressive and encouraging🏆. It served as a powerful reminder of the strong network of support available to Japanese language learners in this part of Australia.

Language is, at its core, a bridge that connects people, cultures and perspectives🌸. For younger generations especially, learning a foreign language remains one of the most meaningful pathways to genuine intercultural understanding.

To all young Australians studying Japanese: I encourage you to continue your journey with confidence and determination, and never give up on your studies📚. – Shingo Higashimoto, Consul.

On March 24th, Consul Higashimoto received a visit from four young Australians, who are preparing to embark on a year-long study abroad program in Japan. The participants, whose interests include Japanese pop culture, fashion, and winter sports, will spend the next 12 months living in regional cities in Japan.

Consul Higashimto expressed hope that grassroots youth exchange continues to further mutual understanding between Australia and Japan, and in turn heightens enthusiasm for the 50th Anniversary of the signing of the Basic Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation, between the two countries.

At the end of the meeting, Consul Higashimoto encouraged the students to "Seize the Day," and make the most of their time in Japan.

On February 27, the Emperor’s Birthday Reception was held at a hotel in the city. Approximately 150 guests attended, including The Honourable Warren Entsch - former Chairman of the Australia-Japan Parliamentary Friendship League, State Parliamentarians, the Mayor Amy Eden of Cairns Regional Council, Members of the Consular Corps, representatives of the tourism industry, Japanese Cultural and Educational organisations and business professionals from both Japan and Australia.

After the national anthems of Japan and Australia, Consul-General Ishikawa of Brisbane delivered an address. Congratulatory remarks and a speech by Cairns Mayor Amy Eden followed. The guests then participated in a toast led by Consul-General Ishikawa and former chairman The Honourable Warren Entsch.

The event featured demonstrations by Japanese Wagashi (Japanese Confectionary) chefs and a tea ceremony performed by the Urasenke school. Ikebana flower arrangements decorated the venue, and beverages shipped from Japan such as Sake, whiskey, wine, and other drinks were served.

Videos showcasing the activities of Their Majesties the Emperor and Empress, the 50th anniversary of the Australia-Japan Basic Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation, investment promotion in Japan, and Japanese tourism promotions were also screened.

Today, we were visited by the group of Japanese confectioners (wagashi artisans) that will be performing at the Cairns celebration of the Birthday of His Majesty the Emperor of Japan, on February 27th.

Truly works of art, wagashi (sweets) are highly acclaimed worldwide. Japanese wagashi embody the changing seasons of Japan and the spirit of the artisan.

Each piece requires the careful selection of seasonal ingredients, meticulous preparation and thoughtful design.

The Japanese confectioners currently visiting Cairns have conducted demonstrations and student workshops around the globe, including in Taiwan and France.

Having them perform at this year’s Emperor’s Birthday Reception provides an ideal opportunity to showcase the charm of Japan and its appreciation for beauty, which I am confident will be warmly received by the Cairns community - Shingo Higashimoto, Consul, Consular Office of Japan in Cairns.
