Fletcher Street Cottage

Fletcher Street Cottage Support, information, referrals, basic needs and advocacy for locals in need: Byron Community Centre.

Responding to the growing need for services supporting the local homeless, Byron Community Centre + Creative Capital (the team behind Habitat) have joined forces to reopen Fletcher Street Cottage, located in the middle of town. Previously run as a drop-in centre for the homeless, Fletcher Street Cottage has been closed for five years, due to a lack of funding. Owned by council, they recently voted to reopen the cottage as a hub for Byron's most vulnerable with co-located services making for easy access.

Legends supporting locals! It was wonderful to welcome Kelvin from the Lennox Head Lions Club to Fletcher Street Cottage.

Over the years, the Lions Club has generously supported our community through support, food vouchers and Emergency Relief for Women’s Space, alongside funds raised through the annual John Mitchell Charity Golf Day.

A huge thank you to Kelvin and the Lennox Head Lions Club for continuing to stand behind Fletcher Street Cottage and people doing it tough in our community. We are so grateful to you all!

“The Art Space is a welcoming and safe space for participants to come and join with others for company or to focus on and create their own individual project. At the end of the class participants can engage in a sharing circle and talk about what they have created or how the Art Space made them feel today. Participants often mention how significantly calmer and more regulated they feel after doing the art class.” - Jennifer Abed, Art Space Facilitator

“Fletcher Street Cottage has achieved so many positive, needed and deserved outcomes to many who have walked through our doors. But essentially we have all achieved this, we have not done this alone. Thanks to the wider community who donate their time, their money and their love to allow us to keep our doors open. Thanks to our many volunteers who bring their magic to the cottage too and make what we do possible.” - Damian Farrell, Fletcher Street Cottage Manager

Real change starts by listening. Representatives from the Justice and Equity Centre's Homeless Persons' Legal Service visited Fletcher Street Cottage alongside StreetCare to speak with service users about their experiences navigating the legal system.

"By listening to people with lived experience of housing insecurity, these conversations help shape stronger housing and homelessness policy, improve access to justice and ensure the voices of our community are heard where they matter most." - Damian Farrell, Manager

Thank you to the Justice and Equity Centre and StreetCare for taking the time to connect with our community and champion meaningful change.
