Unity is a team of people who are passionately committed to making Cairns a better place to live and do business. Unity is an apolitical group largely made up of people who have strong community ties and business backgrounds and who are united in their goal of ensuring the future prosperity of Cairns. Unity’s guiding principles are to:
- Stimulate and grow our economy and encourage investment;
- D

eliver a cost competitive council;
- Ensure funding levels are adequate to maintain our assets;
- Improve the livability of Cairns
- Maintain or improve the level of service to the community;
- Provide for new community infrastructure; and,
- Place the smallest possible burden upon ratepayers in terms of the increase in rates and charges. Unity believes that good governance is about building public trust in its ability as corporate managers and community leaders. To that end, Unity’s focus has always been to make decisions that will enable Cairns to reach its potential as the country’s premier regional city and the biggest urban area of Northern Australia, and build upon its global tourist reputation as a must-visit destination.

Mayor Terry James recently launched the Cairns Unity Team's comprehensive crime strategy. While ensuring that the Queensland Government takes the lead on crime prevention, a Unity led council will play its part to promote safe public spaces.

From Babinda to Ellis, we commit to more CCTV in public spaces, increasing our Public Space Safety Officers to patrol council areas, improved lighting in crime hot spots, and working with all levels of Government on youth engagement programs.

IN a bid to tackle rising crime rates and ensure the safety of residents, Unity Team has recently announced a raft of measures included in their comprehensive crime and safety policy.
