Brunswick Valley Rescue Squad - VRA Rescue NSW

Brunswick Valley Rescue Squad - VRA Rescue NSW Brunswick Valley Rescue Squad consists of a group of dedicated volunteers and is the primary rescue organisation for Byron Shire and beyond.

We are the Brunswick Valley Rescue Squad, part of the Volunteer Rescue Association (VRA). We are the primary rescue service in Byron Shire and surrounds. As the name suggests we're a group of volunteers that is called upon when a person or animal is in strife. We are generally activated by the police when you phone Triple Zero (000) and rescue people from car crashes, cliffs, floods and more. Our

mission is to provide the very best rescue service available. We are on call 7 days a week 24 hours a day, rain, hail or shine. We're often on scene for hours at a time and baulk at nothing. Our service is provided to you for free and our squad is mostly self funded with little money coming from the government. We work hard at fund raising as well as obtaining sponsorships and donations from generous people in the shire. If you are interested in donating please get in contact, it is tax deductible. Alternatively we are always happy to hear from people looking to join the squad. There are few prerequisites to become a member, you will be provided comprehensive training and never expected to do anything you are not comfortable with or capable of. There are over 50 VRA squads throughout New South Wales ready to lend a “helping hand, anywhere, anytime.”

A huge thank you to Commonwealth Bank for their generous $1,500 donation through the CommBank Community Donations Program.

VRA Rescue NSW Brunswick Valley is made up of 100% volunteers, and donations like this directly support our ability to respond to emergencies across our local community.

This contribution will be put towards replacing one of our defibrillators, also known as an AED, which is a vital piece of lifesaving equipment used during medical emergencies.

Thank you again CommBank Mullumbimby for helping us save lives locally.

This afternoon, VRA Brunswick Valley Rescue Squad responded to a single motor vehicle accident in the vicinity of Gulgan Road.

Rescue operators utilised e-draulic rescue tools to extricate the occupant from the vehicle before they were conveyed to hospital by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter.

Our thoughts are with all involved.

A reminder to all motorists to drive to the conditions, particularly with wet roads across the region.

VRA Rescue NSW was activated this evening to a flood rescue at Wooyung after a vehicle became stranded in flood water.

Our in-water flood rescue operators deployed using an Ark Angel raft to safely rescue the driver from the vehicle and bring them back to safety.

Please remember, there’s still a lot of water around: if it’s flooded, forget it.

A tragic day for our colleagues at Marine Rescue NSW following the loss of lives while responding to a vessel in distress off Ballina.

Volunteers across all our emergency services make up a crucial thread woven into the fabric of NSW. Their dedication and commitment never go unnoticed.

Our thoughts are with their families, friends and colleagues, as well as the Ballina community, where this loss will be deeply felt.

Not every rescue happens on a road.

Over the weekend, our volunteers trained in 4WD skills and beach driving, preparing for the times we’re called to remote stretches of the Byron Shire coastline where standard vehicles can’t reach.

From injured beachgoers to medical emergencies in isolated locations, getting there quickly and safely matters.

This session focused on driving in soft sand, vehicle recovery, and operating in coastal conditions so we’re ready when it counts.

All done by volunteers, for our community.

This is what six months of commitment looks like. 💚🚨

We’re incredibly proud to welcome seven newly qualified Road Crash Rescue Operators to the Brunswick Valley Rescue Squad following six months of hard work, training and assessment.

These volunteers have dedicated countless hours to developing the specialist skills needed to rescue people trapped in vehicles - strengthening our ability to provide 24/7 rescue coverage, 365 days a year across the Byron Shire and surrounding communities.

A big thank you to those who helped make this training possible:
- Northern Rivers Towing Service for access to their yard and the vehicles used for training
- WEBER RESCUE SYSTEMS and InterFire Agencies for their ongoing support with rescue tools
- VRA Rescue NSW’s Capability Squad and VRA Rescue NSW - Region North for their support and assistance throughout the training and assessment process

Please join us in congratulating our newest operators and thanking them for stepping up to serve their community 💪👏

🚑 Rescue Assist – Tyagarah Beach 🚑
Yesterday evening, Brunswick Valley VRA Rescue NSW operators were called to assist NSW Ambulance with transporting a patient from a remote section of beach near to the waiting ambulance.

Working together, crews ensured the patient was safely moved from the beach for further medical care.

Great teamwork on scene, and our best wishes are with the patient. 💚
