Online Shop - https://broomebirdobservatoryshop.square.site The BBO is located on Yawuru country, sitting along the shores of Roebuck Bay, a Ramsar-listed wetland. Thousands of migratory shorebirds use the bay as their feeding grounds. This unique location offers one of the best shorebird viewing sites in the world.

We just held our 14th school excursion out to the Broome Bird Observatory and Roebuck Bay today! It our last one for the season! We also got to visit 13 classrooms this year! In total 680 Broome primary and secondary students learnt more about the incredible migratory shorebirds that will spend the next 7 months in Roebuck Bay before flying to the Arctic to breed again next March and April! These birds are so vulnerable to disturbance from humans. Hopefully we have 680 shorebird ambassadors that will share with their families and friends to make sure to give flocks on the high tide beaches of the bay plenty of space so they can rest! It has been thanks to funding from the West Australian Government’s State NRM program that we could make this happen!

When a bird flys over the mudskippers they hit their mud burrows quickly. It helps with having periscopic eyes on the top of their head to watch for predators!

Every time the birds get pushed in by the tide, it’s always a different experience. Here more birds dropped in to join the flock at the roost on the Pindan rich red soils of Roebuck Bay. It’s a mixed flock of Great Knots, Godwits and a few other migratory shorebird species.

For those that have been requesting natural audio on my videos… here it is - volume up. On still days this is as good as it gets. When there is wind you can’t hear anything. Either way enjoy watching the migratory shorebirds hop, walk and skip away from the incoming tide.

What you can see here is the next generation of shorebird ambassadors! Year 5’s getting to experience the magic of Shorebirds in Roebuck Bay and learning how to avoid disturbing the birds. Our shorebird education and community outreach continues this year with thanks to the WA State NRM Grant program!
