USAR Training 🚨

Tonight, members of the Broken Hill Unit completed USAR training, focusing on identifying worksites and practising USAR marking procedures.

Members worked through the process of correctly marking entry points to worksites, ensuring they are clearly identifiable and providing important information for any USAR teams that may need to enter and operate within the site.

Training such as this helps our members continue developing their skills and preparedness for a range of emergency situations.

HEADING TO THE MUNDI MUNDI BASH? LET'S KEEP IT SAFE OUT THERE 🎸

Thousands of you are making the trip to Broken Hill this week, and the Bureau of Meteorology is forecasting rain across the Far West. Looks like we might all be taking the Weather With You, so a bit of planning goes a long way.

On the road

🚗 Never drive through flood water.Out here a dry creek crossing can turn into an Ocean in minutes, and it doesn't matter how big the 4WD is or how good the playlist is. If it's flooded, forget it.

🗺️ Check Live Traffic NSW to plan your route before you leave and keep checking as you go. Unsealed roads out west can become impassable when they're wet, even when they're not flooded. By all means Go Your Own Way, just make sure it's a road that's actually open.

🔧 Give the car a once over before you leave. Tyres, fuel, water, and yes, The Radiators. Help can be a long way away out there. Arriving a few hours late is a whole lot Better Than not arriving at all.

At the Bash

⛺ With wind and rain on the cards, spend a few extra minutes getting the camp set up properly. Extra pegs, extra guy ropes, and pitch it on Solid Rock where you can, not in a low spot that'll turn into a puddle overnight.

☂️ Wind the awning in when you're asleep or up at the stage. An unattended awning in a gust is the fastest way to ruin your weekend, and possibly your neighbour's too.

🎒 These are the Fundamentals, and they only take a few minutes.

📱 Download the Hazards Near Me app before you leave home while you've still got decent reception. Mobile coverage gets patchy out west, so get it sorted early rather than trying to load it on the road.

📱 Set a watch zone for your route and for Broken Hill, then check it for storm and flood warnings before you go and while you're out there.

🚨 Broken Hill SES Operations 🚨

Over the weekend, our Broken Hill SES members were kept busy, with 13 jobs coming in following the rainfall we received across the weekend.

Our jobs included a mixture of leaking roofs, fallen trees and sandbag requests, with our volunteers working hard to assist members of our community who needed a helping hand.

A huge thank you to our members who gave up their weekend to respond and support our community.

Our volunteers are always willing to assist when our community needs us.

🚨 Careers Expo 2026 🚨

Today, six volunteers from the Broken Hill NSW SES attended the Careers Expo at the Gary Radford Pavilion, where we had a fantastic day engaging with our community.

One of the highlights was our new flood mapping display, with many people keen to find their homes and see how their area could be affected during a flood event. A big thank you to Broken Hill City Council for completing the flood study, which made these maps possible.

We also had an interactive rescue challenge, where participants used our rescue tools to carefully move a ball from one cone to another. It was a fun activity that gave people a hands-on insight into some of the equipment our volunteers use.

Throughout the day, we spoke with around 50–60 community members and young people, sharing what the NSW SES does and how rewarding it is to volunteer. It was fantastic to see so much interest, and our members always enjoy attending events like these and connecting with the community.

If you’ve ever considered giving back to your community, volunteering with the NSW SES is a great way to make a real difference. We’d love to welcome you to our team.

🚨 Training Night 🚨

On Monday night, members of the Broken Hill Unit put their Road Crash Rescue (RCR) skills into practice during a hands-on training exercise.

The session covered a range of rescue techniques, including vehicle stabilisation, scene management, roof removal, door removal, and glass management. It also provided our newer members with valuable experience using the rescue equipment and learning the techniques we rely on when responding to real-life incidents.

Training like this ensures our volunteers are prepared, confident, and ready to respond when our community needs us most. It was a fantastic night, with everyone enjoying the opportunity to develop their skills and work together as a team.

This weekend, Broken Hill Unit Commander DeWayne joined Unit Leaders from across the Western Zone at the NSW SES Leadership Forum in Dubbo.

The forum provided a fantastic opportunity to share knowledge, learn from each other’s experiences, and build on the skills needed to lead our volunteers effectively.

Throughout the weekend, leaders discussed decision-making under pressure, leadership, and how we can continue to develop stronger leaders across our units. Everyone brought different experiences and perspectives to the table, creating valuable discussions and plenty of ideas to take back to their own units.

Leaders travelled from across the Western Zone, from Lithgow in the east to Broken Hill in the far west, and as far north as Lightning Ridge, giving up their weekend to be part of the forum.

During the forum, DeWayne was also honoured to accept an award on behalf of the Broken Hill Unit in recognition of the unit’s achievement in successfully completing 75% of the Job Ready course with our new members. This award reflects the dedication of our trainers and volunteers, who continue to support and develop the next generation of NSW SES members.

The strength of the NSW SES has always been its people, and this weekend was another great reminder of that. The Broken Hill Unit is proud to have been part of the forum and looks forward to putting the knowledge and ideas gained over the weekend into practice to continue strengthening our capability and supporting the Far West community.

A huge thank you to everyone involved in organising the forum and to all of the leaders who gave up their weekend to invest in the future of the NSW SES.

⚠️ AusAlert is a new national warning system that uses the latest technology to send emergency messages to compatible mobile devices.

It will be ready to use in October 2026, but before it launches, we need to test the system across Australia.

‼️ On Monday 27 July, your mobile devices, such as mobile phones, tablets and smart watches, may receive a test alert.

The test times across Australian time zones are:
• 2:00 pm AEST (QLD, NSW, ACT, VIC, TAS)
• 1:30 pm ACST (SA, NT, Broken Hill NSW)
• 12:00 pm AWST (WA)

The message will vibrate and include a loud, siren-like sound that lasts about 10 seconds.
If this could disrupt you or cause you or a loved one to feel unsafe, please turn off your mobile devices or switch them to aeroplane mode before the scheduled test time in your location, and leave them off for at least one hour.

As this is just a test, you don’t need to do anything, but in an actual disaster you should follow the alert instructions to keep yourself and others safe.

🚨 Training Night 🚨

Tonight, our members completed training in both line searching for missing persons and forensic searching, techniques used when assisting NSW Police during search operations.

Regular training like this is essential to ensure our volunteers are prepared to respond effectively when our community needs us most. By continually developing and refining these skills, we can provide the highest level of support during search incidents.

The Broken Hill Unit will be conducting land search training tonight at Sturt Park.

If you see NSW SES volunteers in the area, please don’t be alarmed. This is a planned training exercise designed to help our members develop and maintain the vital skills required to conduct searches for missing people and/or artefacts of interest.

Regular training ensures our volunteers are prepared to respond effectively when called upon to assist the community.
