We had an unexpected find today at Nudgee Beach. This cute little Blue-ringed Octopus was found hiding around a Mud Whelk shell in the fringe mangroves of the Nudgee Beach tidal flats.

While these cephalopods inhabit seagrass beds and intertidal rocky reefs in shallow waters, they are not often encountered here in Moreton Bay due to being predominantly nocturnal, shy and masters of camouflage.

Here you can see it blending in with the sandy sediments until becoming threatened and showing off its beautiful and vibrant blue rings.

These amazing creatures produce a neurotoxin called tetrodotoxin that is over 1000 times more potent than cyanide. One bite from this small octopus is enough to kill several humans within 30 minutes! Luckily, they are not aggressive, and bites to humans are quite rare. Phew!

If you come across one of these molluscs, make sure to appreciate their alien beauty from afar ❤️🐙

We have observed bar-tailed godwits last week feeding on the intertidal flats at Nudgee Beach. They are back!
