KINCHANT DAM | Controlled burns

Residents and visitors to Kinchant Dam are advised that controlled burns are scheduled on Tuesday 14 July 2026 to reduce fuel loads and the subsequent risk of bushfires.

Smoke may impact the local area during these burns. Decreased visibility on nearby roads is possible, so it is important that motorists drive safely to the conditions.

The recreation area and boat ramp will remain open during this time.

Turning science into shared action 🌿💧

Sunwater recently joined agencies from across the Fitzroy to talk blue-green algae. Hosted by Fitzroy River Water and led by experienced researchers from Central Queensland Uni and Ecoscope Environmental, the workshop looked at the realities of blue-green algae in our waterways.

From understanding which species are present locally to exploring how cyanotoxins are managed under drinking water and recreational guidelines, the discussion was both practical and thought-provoking.

What stood out most was the power of collaboration. Managing water quality risks like blue-green algae isn’t something we can tackle alone but we can really shift the needle when operators, engineers, scientists and environmental practitioners come together to share knowledge, discuss challenges and align on action.

Workshops like this play a critical role in strengthening our collective capability and ensuring we continue to protect the health of our waterways and communities in Lower Fitzroy.

Sunshine and smiles at Lake Proserpine Open Day! ☀️☺️

What a fantastic day, with perfect weather and an incredible community spirit on display.

Around 600 people attended the event, enjoying a range of activities including a fingerling release, casting competition, flare demonstration, helicopter flyover and wildlife education session. 🚁🐟

The Sunwater team had a fabulous time connecting with community members throughout the day – discussing safety at our dams and taking 60 visitors on a ‘behind-the-scenes’ tour of the dam.

We love being part of events that bring communities together and showcase the great places and people in our regions.

Thank you to everyone who came along and helped make the day such a success and congratulations to Whitsunday Regional Council on delivering such a successful event, proudly supported by Sunwater.

Water year off to a strong start 💧

Following a very active wet season, many Sunwater storages are at healthy levels, with all high-priority water allocations at 100% across our network.

For Central Queensland’s Nogoa Mackenzie scheme, it’s a welcome turnaround – medium priority allocations have gone from 0% a year ago to a positive allocation this year, providing much-needed relief for farmers and communities doing it tough.

While drier conditions are forecast, Sunwater remains focused on maximising water availability and delivering the water security regional Queensland relies on.

Hear from our EGM Operations & Customer, Colin Bendall, as he kicks off the new water year.

Celebrating 50 Years of Deadly 🌄

Sunwater proudly joins communities across Australia in celebrating and recognising the histories, cultures and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

NAIDOC Week honours the resilience of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and celebrates culture, history and community connection.

As a business that operates across regional Queensland, we acknowledge First Nations leadership and the continued legacy of the Indigenous rights movement and self-determination efforts.

Water has been managed by First Nations peoples for tens of thousands of years and holds profound cultural, spiritual, economic and environmental significance. This week provides an opportunity to join with local First Nations communities and celebrate the ongoing cultures and identities of First Nations peoples across Australia.

Exploring the outdoors these school holidays? We’re all for it! But make sure you stay safe. 🦺

Our dams may look calm, but conditions can change rapidly and without warning – even when everything seems still on the surface.

To keep yourself and others safe:
🔹 Respect all exclusion zones and warning signs
🔹 Stay well clear of dam walls, spillways and outlets
🔹Never enter restricted areas
🔹Be aware that water levels and flows can change suddenly

Think twice, stay alert and look out for your mates.

A little rain couldn't stop the fun! ☔

Around 200 people joined us at Bjelke-Petersen Dam for the South Burnett Family Fun Day on Sunday!

It was a fantastic day of community connection, family fun and water safety conversations.

Visitors stopped by the Sunwater stand to try our Submerged Hazards Tank, where kids tested their hazard-detecting skills by feeling for hidden objects beneath murky water. 💧

Thank you to everyone who came along to say hello and learnt more about staying safe in and around the water. And a big thank you to South Burnett Regional Council for hosting another great community event. 👏
