A big few days in the Pioneer Bowen Basin! 💧

Our latest Customer Experience (CX) Program hit the road for a real‑world look at how our water supports the people, farms and industries that keep this region thriving.

With help from local Sunwater legends Jason and Bailey, the group visited Kinchant and Eungella dams, the Eungella Water Pipeline and the Olive Downs mine site. For many, stepping inside a working coal mine was a once‑in‑a‑lifetime experience – and a powerful reminder of how important reliable water is to jobs, communities and the future of the Pioneer Bowen Basin.

Programs like this help our team stay connected to the communities we serve and deepen our understanding of the customers who rely on us every day. We’re proud to support this region and the people who shape it. 👏

Burdekin Falls Dam | Boil water alert

Effective immediately 1pm Friday 29 May 2026

Sunwater advises all residents and visitors at Burdekin Falls Dam to boil tap water used for drinking following the identification of an issue at the water treatment plant in the Burdekin Falls Dam potable water supply.

Bottled water will be provided if required, available for collection from the Sunwater office.

Sunwater is working closely with Queensland Health to resolve the situation, and is undertaking corrective actions to restore the potable supply as quickly as possible.

This alert will stay in effect until Sunwater and Queensland Health are confident there is no longer a public health concern. Regular updates will be provided.

Some turtle-y fantastic news from Rookwood! 🐢💚

Our consultants from Tunuba, GHD and Blue Earth Environmental have spent 10 days monitoring local turtle populations at Rookwood Weir (Managibei Gamu).

And just look what they found! Four juvenile Fitzroy River turtles – the most recorded in a single day since we began the monitoring program in 2017. In fact, only six juveniles have been recorded previously.

This is a big deal because young turtles are essential for the future of the species. Seeing more juveniles means there’s hope for the next generation 🌱

These regular surveys help track turtle health, monitor water quality, and check how well the turtle passage at Rookwood Weir is working – while giving experts the chance to step in and help when needed.

It’s incredible to see conservation in action and to know these efforts are making a real difference 🐢

Relocating the locals 🐟

When water is released from Coolmunda Dam for environmental flows and customer supply, fish can drift into what we call a dissipation bay – and many decide to stay.

A dissipation bay is a chamber immediately downstream of a dam spillway that connects to the natural watercourse. The dissipation bay at Coolmunda has a surface area of roughly 1000 sqm and is about three metres deep.

Before draining it for its regular inspection, our crews took special care to relocate those native fish who had made it their temporary home. Using nets, a crane and an aeration trailer, they to carefully relocated our aquatic friends to a safe spot downstream.

Over two days, the team relocated:
🔹48 Murray Cod (most around 500mm, with one giant measuring 1.2m)
🔹66 Golden Perch
🐢20 turtles
🔹more than 1,000 Bony Bream
🔹as well as a mix of other native species.

Once the inspection was complete, the bay was refilled – ready for the next group of aquatic visitors to take up residence.

Thanks to everyone who helped make this a safe relocation – these locals are now back where they belong, living their best fish lives. 👏

Come behind the scenes with our storage operators! 👀

Frank from Mareeba is giving us a closer look as he carries out an important task inside the Tinaroo Falls Dam wall – flushing the uplift drain.

Every three months, Frank heads into the dam to clear the drain, a crucial job that keeps water pathways flowing and prevents blockages. It’s hands-on work that involves feeding a hose all the way to the bottom of the drain to ensure everything stays clear and operates as it should.

Routine work like this plays a vital role in keeping our dams safe, reliable and performing at their best – and we couldn’t do it without storage operators like Frank. ⭐
