Do you love to fix things, specifically, bones and joints? If so, we have just the role for you! 🧑‍⚕️🦴

Redcliffe Orthopaedic Co-Directors Dr Alexey and Dr Michelle are on the hunt for an Orthopaedic Staff Specialist to deliver care across a broad range of orthopaedic services including trauma, fracture management and reconstructive surgery.

"Orthopaedics rewards precision. Whether that is fixing fractures or replacing joints, everything has to line up well to work again for the patient," Dr Alexey said.

"We are looking for not only a surgeon, but someone who can teach and help train the next generation of doctors, someone who wants to work in a team where their opinions are shared freely and who will collaborate with the team on complex cases."

"A special interest in hand, shoulder or foot and ankle would be a priority, to look after our interesting and complex cases." Dr Michelle added.

Did you know that approximately 50,000 Australians live with a stoma?

Despite this, there are many myths on what having a stoma is like! Stomal Therapy Clinical Nurse Consultant Liz and Clinical Nurses Megan and Carolyn work with clinicians and patients at RBWH to provide education and support around stomal therapy and have weighed in on some common myths they hear in their line of work.

👃"Stoma pouches have a distinct smell."👃
All the stoma pouches are odour proof and have a charcoal neutraliser for when gas is passed. There may be a smell when the bag is changed or emptied, but this is done in the bathroom.

🍔"Having a stoma means you can't eat the foods you enjoy."🍔
Most people can return to a varied diet after surgery. Some foods may cause more gas, odour or blockages for certain people so it's about knowing your own tolerances and making dietary changes when needed.

👴"Only elderly people have stomas."👴
There are many conditions that may require someone to require a stoma, including cancer, irritable bowel disorders, trauma, neurological conditions or genetic conditions. The highest cohort of IBD patients are young people.

🙅"You can't live a normal life with a stoma."🙅
Once you are recovered from surgery, the stoma itself doesn't stop anyone from living their life. People with stomas can work, exercise, travel, swim and shower, and enjoy most of the activities that they did before.

I'm still hoping for a kidney, a lot of people abuse their body, and I stopped doing that a long time ago, gave up the smokes. You just got to take the cards you get dealt. The staff here are fantastic people and they can't do enough for you."

Certified girl Dad Will is looking forward to a quiet one this Father's Day after his second daughter, whose name is still undecided was born earlier this week at the RBWH. 🩷

"We will sort of play it by ear and see how my partner is going, we would love to go get a massage," Will said.

"We haven't decided on the name yet, but we are leaning towards Sunday-Rose, we've always loved the name Sunday."

Fittingly, Father's Day falls on a Sunday - with this year looking extra special for Will.

"It's pretty surreal, our other daughter is very excited to be a big sister. She has plenty of girl cousins with sisters and has been very patient and now she has one of her own," he added.

Everyone deserves to feel safe at our hospitals, and Security Officers like Georgia make that possible. 🦺💪

"Every day is different, some days we are on 'jobs' at the wards or in certain areas and then sometimes we are just on patrol," Georgia explains, about her role at Redcliffe Hospital.

"If we are on the wards often the nurses are so busy that if a patient just needs some reassurance or some food, we are able to help them out in little ways.

"I have always had an interest in policing and security and have been at Redcliffe for the last year and a half, it's so awesome and we have quite a close-knit group here that always looks out for each other."

There are many unique roles in healthcare, and you might be surprised to know that getting behind the camera can be of them! Rachelle combines her clinical knowledge from dental nursing and prosthetics with her love for being creative to capture important clinical moments. 📸

Working as a Clinical Photographer and Medical Illustrator, Rachelle meets patients "from all walks of life" and sees photography through a scientific lens, as an important part of the healthcare team.

"We run around to many different areas, our big ones are dermatology and plastic surgery doing mole mapping, wound progress photos and also pre- and post-surgery shots," Rachelle explained.

"I come from a background in dental prosthetics and dental nursing but then did my certificate and diploma in photography. Although working in dental wasn't for me, I still have so much knowledge of anatomy and biology so being able to put all that knowledge into something creative, I love that aspect.

"Often times I'm seeing patients at their most vulnerable moments, after just learning they require a mastectomy or that their mole is a skin cancer. I do my best to make them feel as comfortable as possible and be that smiling face for them."

Every year at Redcliffe Hospital, thousands of elective and emergency surgeries take place across the seven theatres, with Clinical Nurse Vanessa keeping them all on schedule.🕰️🏥

Vanessa has worked at Redcliffe for 20 years, with the theatre bookings space providing her a chance to help patients with their concerns during what can be a difficult time.

"We cover lots of areas, we organise both elective and emergency surgeries as well as outsourcing for Surgery Connect patients," Vanessa said.

"We can assist people with inter-hospital transfers, confirmation calls, any queries that patients may have and ensuring the surgical wait list is managed so patients are being treated on time."

Dr Lucy takes her role working with our older population seriously, and while she loves spending time with her patients on the TPCH ward, she is happiest when they get to go ‘home’.

Not all patients will be well enough to return to the home they have known, and many are waiting for aged care placements in a residential aged care facility.

“We know our patients who are well enough to leave hospital should not be spending longer than they need in a hospital ward – it’s much better for patients both clinically and emotionally if they can be discharged to their new home,” Dr Dakin said.

“As a geriatrician, we work hard to keep our older patients awaiting aged care placements as physically and emotionally well as we can, but we understand that more interim care arrangements and aged care solutions are needed.

“We treat unwell patients, but when a patient is well enough to be discharged to their new home with supports so they can continue doing the things they love, we want to see them do that.” 💛🏡
