We provide support and advice to local governments, delivers capacity-building resources and training, and administers grant and funding programs to build infrastructure and create employment. We're part of the Department of State Development, Infrastructure, Local Government and Planning.

This page is moderated between 9 am and 5 pm (AEST, Brisbane) Monday to Friday to ensure discussions remain within acceptable boundaries. Private messages will be acknowledged via return message by close of business the following day.

Did you catch us at the Western Queensland Alliance of Councils (WQAC) Assembly last week?

Director-General Bronwyn Blagoev joined our leadership team to discuss the opportunities and challenges shaping Western Queensland's future, and how we're supporting councils and their communities through our local government and water portfolios.

Our staff were also on the ground throughout the assembly, connecting with council representatives, sharing insights, and discussing the issues that matter most to communities across the region.

Thank you to the Western Queensland Alliance of Councils for hosting another successful assembly and providing a valuable forum for collaboration, knowledge sharing and discussion.

Connecting the Queensland Government with regional Queensland. 🤝

Western Queensland’s future depends on the decisions we make today.💡

This week, our leadership team will be attending the Western Queensland Alliance of Councils 2026 Assembly to talk about the opportunities and challenges shaping the future of the region.

They’ll be discussing:
✅ Funding and regulatory certainty for councils.
✅ Long-term water planning and water security.
✅ Water infrastructure that supports growth and investment.
✅ How our department can better connect, coordinate and deliver for regional communities.

Most importantly, we want to hear from you.

As councils plan for the future, what can we be doing to better support you in getting things done? How can we better communicate and engage with you? Where can we be most useful?

Start thinking about the questions you’d like to raise during the session. We’re looking forward to a practical conversation about how we can work together to support strong, resilient and thriving Western Queensland communities.

If you’ve been working in Flinders Shire Council or Charters Towers Regional Council in North Queensland, you might recognise our Senior Region Advisor Duncan!

From helping councils through recent legislative changes to visiting remote communities across the region, Duncan has just completed his first six months in the role, building connections and helping councils access the information they need to deliver for their communities.

Covering vast local government areas with unique needs, our RA’s play an important role in connecting state and local government. They are often the first point of contact for councils seeking information, guidance or assistance.

RAs like Duncan work closely with councils, whether it's on the phone, via Teams or more importantly, when we go out to visit councils in person.

In a jam-packed first six months with the department, Duncan has delivered information sessions about legislation changes, assisted councils in the delivery of funded projects through grants management and provided regional intelligence to regional and central offices on emerging policy/legislation issues and projects.

Looking for funding to help improve digital connectivity, capability and workforce growth in your South East Queensland community? 📶

Up to $50 million is available through the Local Digital Priority Projects (LDPP) funding program for eligible organisations across SEQ.

Eligible applicants include SEQ local governments, public and private sector entities, regional economic development organisations, chambers of commerce and not-for-profit organisations.

Applications close 5pm on Monday 24 August 2026.

Roll up, roll up! The Ekka is finally here! 🎠

We are proud to support the Ekka through funding from the Show Societies Grants Program.

The program delivers a share of $2.5 million in funding to Queensland’s 129 show societies.

Between the rides, agricultural displays and strawberry sundaes, be sure to drop by the Queensland Government Precinct and find out how the Department of Local Government, Water and Volunteers is delivering for you and explore interactive displays, government resources and giveaways.

More fun is waiting in the Lockyer Valley!

Littleton Park in Gatton and Lions Park in Laidley have been upgraded with new, Australian-made play equipment, creating safer and more inclusive spaces for local children and families to enjoy.

Backed by $500,000 from the Queensland Government and delivered by the Lockyer Valley Regional Council, the upgrades also include shade sails to help protect families from the Queensland sun.

Celebrating 50 Years of Deadly: NAIDOC Week 2026 💛❤️🖤

As we celebrate 50 years of NAIDOC Week, we recognise the strength, resilience, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

We're proud to have supported Cherbourg Aboriginal Shire Council with $600,000 through Works for Queensland to upgrade their Town Hall.

The improvements include enhanced disability access, interior renovations, upgraded security, digitalisation of the hall, and a refurbished kitchen, creating a more accessible, modern, and functional community space.

Congratulations to the Cherbourg community on this significant milestone and the completion of these fantastic upgrades.

We’re proud to partner with Kowanyama Aboriginal Shire Council to deliver a refreshed and more resilient council administration building for the community.

With $1.5 million in funding through the Works for Queensland program, the refurbishment included:
🏠 A new roof
🪟 Replacement glass windows and security screens
🧱 Realigned office spaces
🎥 Security cameras and alarms
⚡ Upgraded electrical systems
☀️ Solar panels.

These upgrades will help create a safer, more comfortable and sustainable workspace for council staff, supporting them to continue the important work they do every day for the Kowanyama community.
