The Queensland Women page is managed by the Office for Women (Department of Women, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships and Multiculturalism). This is an open forum, and we encourage everyone to participate in open and constructive conversation about themes relevant to women and girls in Queensland. We monitor this page from 9.00 am to 5.00 pm (AEST) Monday to Friday to ensure our community members are not exposed to offensive language, discrimination or manipulative or predatory content.

💬 Comments guidelines

We encourage you to share your views, but we will remove comments that contain:

▶️ profanity, obscenity or vulgarity
▶️ political content such as comments and links
▶️ comments that could be considered prejudicial, racist or inflammatory posts that divert conversations away from the topic or in a deliberately antagonistic direction
▶️ gratuitously violent or sexually explicit or offensive terms and imagery
▶️ comments that defame an individual or group of people
▶️ name calling and/or personal attacks
▶️ repetitious posting of a single comment
▶️ comments that falsely represent another individual, organisation, government or entity

Behind every strong community is someone who believes in helping others rise. For migrant and refugee women in Queensland, Saba Abraham has been that person. 💙

Arriving in Australia as a political refugee from Eritrea, Saba knew first-hand the challenges many women face when rebuilding their lives: trauma, poverty, interrupted education, and the daunting task of starting again in a new country.

Rather than let those challenges define her, Saba turned her experience into action. She founded the Eritrean Women and Family Support Network, creating practical pathways for women and families to build confidence, connection, and a brighter future.

She also established Mu'ooz Eritrean Restaurant & Catering, a social enterprise where women can learn new skills, find employment, build financial independence, and celebrate their culture with pride.

For many in West End, Mu’ooz is a much-loved place to share a meal. But for the women behind those meals, it is much more. It’s a place to learn, grow, belong, and discover what is possible.

Saba’s story is a powerful reminder of what happens when community, culture and opportunity come together. Through her leadership, she has helped women and families to thrive, strengthened connections across Queensland, and created opportunities for people to contribute, participate, and belong.

Her contribution shows that when we help others rise, our whole community becomes stronger.

Honouring a Queensland pioneer 💜

Last week, the Irene Longman statue was unveiled at Queensland Parliament, commemorating the remarkable woman who became Queensland's first female Member of Parliament.

A true trailblazer for women in Queensland, Irene Longman championed women's rights, education and the wellbeing of children at a time when few women had a voice in political decision-making.

Despite being elected as Queensland's first woman in Parliament in 1929, the House failed to accommodate her presence. She was not permitted to dine in the parliamentary dining room because she was a woman, instead taking her meals on the verandah. Her statue, 'Beyond the Verandah', depicts her seated in quiet solitude, a pot of tea by her side, as she writes a speech.

Today, more than 100 women have served in the Queensland Parliament. Irene's legacy continues to inspire women and girls across Queensland to lead, advocate and create change in their communities.

Vale Dr Bronwyn Herbert OAM.

Bronwyn showed us that purpose has no age limit. She completed her Bachelor of Social Work at 40, her master’s at 61 and, at 90, a PhD exploring how homelessness can affect families across generations.

For more than six decades, Bronwyn dedicated her life to supporting children and families experiencing hardship. Her work and research changed countless lives and helped improve our understanding of homelessness and how to break its cycle.

Just last year, Bronwyn was awarded 2025 Queensland Senior Australian of the Year.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to Bronwyn’s family, friends and all those whose lives she touched.

This dress tips the scales at 6.8 kilograms, but the stories it holds carry far more weight.

Now on display in Queensland for the first time, The Red Dress is more than an artwork. It's a global tapestry of culture, resilience, hope and human connection, woven together by hundreds of women from around the world. 💃

British artist Kirstie Macleod began the project to spark conversations about identity through embroidery. Over 14 years, it evolved into something far greater: a platform for women, including those from vulnerable communities, to share their stories, skills and experiences with a global audience.

Our friends at Multicultural Affairs Queensland spoke with Kirstie, along with some of the Queensland women who helped bring the project to Australia, about the power of storytelling, cultural exchange and the extraordinary journey behind this Guinness World Record artwork.

National Science Week is here, and we're celebrating some of Queensland's best and brightest . 💡

From exploring atoms with lasers to studying tiny magnetic signals from the human brain, Dr Eleanor Trimby is using quantum technology to uncover new ways of understanding our world. 🔬

A Postdoctoral Research Fellow at The University of Queensland, Eleanor specialises in quantum optics - using lasers to study atoms and other systems that behave according to the laws of quantum physics.

Eleanor's passion for science began with a love of maths and logic puzzles, but it was learning about major discoveries in physics that truly captured her imagination. 🧩 "I found it so exciting to hear about how vast and complex the universe is."

Today, that same curiosity drives her work in the laboratory, where patience and persistence are just as important as scientific knowledge. 🧠 "It's exciting when an experiment that you've put a lot of time and effort into does start working and you can finally measure something that no one else has been able to measure before."

By exploring how atoms interact with laser light, Eleanor can uncover insights into everything from chemical reactions to magnetic fields. Her current research uses quantum sensors to investigate phenomena ranging from waves and vortices in liquid helium to the tiny magnetic signals produced by the human brain.

One of Eleanor's proudest scientific achievements was helping make the first observations of a particular molecule-forming chemical reaction at low temperatures during her PhD. But when reflecting on her career, she says completing her doctorate remains her greatest achievement.

"There were many small results and lessons learned along the way, and they all contributed to the feeling of pride when I obtained my doctorate."

Her advice for future scientists? "Follow whatever interests you and believe in your abilities." 💭

📣 Queensland’s first Women's Economic Security Strategy has arrived!
The Queensland Government is proud to launch the Women's Economic Security Strategy - a roadmap to help women build stronger financial futures and greater economic independence.

Developed with input from more than 3,000 Queensland women and 110 organisations, the Strategy focuses on:
✅ Building financial confidence and capability
✅ Supporting women returning to work
✅ Increasing women's economic participation
✅ Backing women-led businesses
✅ Expanding leadership opportunities

To help bring the Strategy to life, the Queensland Government is investing $10.5 million in initiatives that support women's economic security, including increased funding for grants focused on financial education and empowerment.
