This R U OK? Day is a timely reminder that even the smallest conversations can make a real difference.

Across Queensland, communities affected by floods, cyclones, storms and bushfires often face ongoing challenges long after the headlines fade. At the same time, the disaster management professionals and volunteers who walk alongside communities can also carry the weight of these experiences.

Disaster resilience is about more than physical infrastructure and operational capability. It is also about supporting the wellbeing of the people who experience disasters and those who dedicate themselves to helping others.

Today is a reminder to check in with colleagues, friends, volunteers and community members. A simple question could be the most important thing you do today.

Yesterday, the Inspector-General and the Director, Research and Communications attended Exercise Impact, the Department of Transport and Main Roads Queensland pre-season exercise focused on the response phase of a significant bushfire disruption.

Hosted by the Transport Network Security and Resilience team, this important session provided an opportunity to discuss processes and activities undertaken during disruption events, identify gaps in knowledge, skills and procedures, and review the effectiveness of existing documentation.

Congratulations to the Department of Transport and Main Roads Queensland for bringing together stakeholders to strengthen preparedness, resilience and coordinated response capabilities ahead of the upcoming season.

A productive afternoon at DMO Day 2026.

Thank you to Dr Margaret Cook from Griffith University for facilitating an engaging panel discussion with Vee Davenport (Scenic Rim Regional Council), Kate Bertola (Mareeba Shire Council) and Mike Tait (Redland City Council), exploring the challenges facing disaster managers, lessons from significant events, and initiatives helping to strengthen community resilience.

We also heard from Jenna Mott (Tablelands Regional Council) on the Resilient Homes, Resilient Communities initiative, and from Sarah Frew and Heather Kelly (Cook Shire Council) on their Community-Powered Resilience program, showcasing practical, community-led approaches to building resilience in remote and regional Queensland.

Thank you to all our speakers and attendees for making DMO Day 2026 such a valuable opportunity to connect, share experiences and continue improving disaster management practices across Queensland.

A timely and engaging session at DMO Day 2026 today. 🦤

A big thank you to Kirsten Phillips, David McNab and the rest of the team from Biosecurity Queensland for sharing insights into H5 avian influenza, Queensland's preparedness and response arrangements, and the potential impacts of an outbreak on communities, industry and government.

Disaster management officers spent the session working through realistic H5 avian influenza outbreak scenarios, exploring the challenges of coordination, communication and response.

With avian influenza continuing to make headlines, it was a valuable, practical and highly relevant workshop.

We are delighted to welcome disaster management officers from councils across Queensland to our DMO Day 2026.

The morning session opened with remarks from the Inspector-General, followed by a keynote from Dr Heather Shearer, Griffith University, on creating a climate hazard and vulnerability index to support local government decision-making, and a presentation from Darron Irwin, Townsville City Council, who shared insights into the city's flash flood risk assessment and warning system planning.
