A special connection to Bulimba
Irene Longman made history in 1929 when the people of Bulimba elected her as the first woman to the Queensland Parliament.
Her story is now permanently recognised at Parliament House through Beyond the Verandah, a life-sized bronze sculpture celebrating her contribution and the barriers she helped break.
Her story also puts the progress of women’s representation into perspective. Di Farmer MP is only the second woman to represent the electorate of Bulimba in the Queensland Parliament.
It’s a significant connection between two women who are part of Bulimba’s parliamentary history.

It's sitting week at Queensland Parliament next week, but what exactly is a sitting day?
A sitting day is more than just a date on the calendar. Under Queensland law, it is any day on which the Legislative Assembly actually sits.
A sitting day begins when the House meets and ends when it adjourns. Sometimes that means proceedings continue well into the night, or even into the early hours of the next morning. A sitting day that starts on one calendar day may not finish until the next.
At the end of each sitting day, Members usually agree to the motion "that the House do now adjourn", which formally concludes proceedings until the next sitting day.

It’s a reminder to check in with the people around us, start a conversation and take the time to really listen.
It’s also a good opportunity to remember that support is available when you need it.
Queensland Parliamentary Service staff have access to CU Health, our Employee Assistance Program provider.
CU Health offers confidential wellbeing support via telehealth, making it easier to access care wherever you are based.
Through CU Health, staff can access GPs, psychologists, dietitians and health coaches for support with mental health, general health, nutrition and wellbeing.
So today, take a moment to ask someone, “R U OK?” And remember, if the answer is no, you don’t have to have all the answers. Sometimes listening and helping someone connect with the right support can make a difference.

This morning, dozens of riders gathered outside Parliament House for the 2026 Wall to Wall Ride for Remembrance. 🏍️ 👮

The annual ride honours the service and sacrifice of police officers across Australia while raising funds for police charities that support officers and their families.

Following this morning’s ceremony at the City Botanic Gardens, riders set off on the first leg of their journey to Grafton. Over the coming days, they will travel through Bathurst and Sydney before arriving in Canberra on 12 September for the National Police Memorial service.

Since 2009, the Wall to Wall Ride for Remembrance has brought together riders from across the country in a powerful show of unity, remembrance, and respect.

Congratulations to the talented students recognised in the 2026 Parliamentary Education Cup Art Competition! 🎨

This year, 77 entries were submitted by students from 25 schools across Queensland, representing 16 electorates and showcasing thoughtful interpretations of democracy through art.

🏆 Senior Winner: Arwa (Brisbane School of Distance Education) for "Fabric of Country".
🏆 Junior Winner: Isabella (Deception Bay State High School) for "Queensland Bunny Community Notice Board".
🏆 Primary Winner: A Year 4/5 student team from Marsden State School for "Democracy Forest".
🏆 Parliamentary Service Choice Award: Tisha (Brisbane State High School) for "What Does Democracy Mean to Me?"
🏆 Civic Spirit Award: Aiva (Bundaberg Christian College) for "A Voice for the Wild."

From democracy as a fabric woven from many voices, to a community noticeboard run by bunnies, to a forest built on respect, fairness, and inclusion, and colourful threads connected through a shared system, this year's artworks demonstrated the creativity and insight of Queensland students.

Congratulations to all participants, finalists, and winners. 👏
