This isn't a baby crab... it's a parasite πŸ¦€πŸ‘€

What looks like a crab is actually home to a parasitic barnacle that has taken over its host, tricking the crab into grooming, protecting and caring for the parasite as though it were its own offspring.

Nick from Queensland Museum's parasitology collection breaks down one of nature's strangest survival tricks.

Did you know music contains triangles, rectangles and curves? Maths is everywhere in music: in its structure and patterns, and, if you know where to look, music is in maths πŸŽΆπŸ“βž—

Science Week question nobody expected: why are we looking at owl vomit?!πŸ¦‰

Queensland Museum’s Kristen Spring (Collection Manager, Geosciences) and Joanne Wilkinson (Senior Fossil Preparator, Geosciences) are sorting through cave deposit material from central Queensland, and it turns out owl vomit is basically a time capsule.

Everything an owl couldn’t digest gets dropped back at the cave floor, giving our scientists a concentrated sample of exactly what lived in the area, and what the climate was like at the time.

To kick off National Science Week, we’re taking you back to the moment a watermelon met its match in Chinchilla last week, wrapped in elastic band after elastic band to see just how much it could take before it finally burst πŸ‰

Spoiler alert: it took 397 bands!

Every single band added tiny amounts of pressure, squeezing the watermelon’s structure tighter and tighter. It’s a lesson in stress, strain and energy transformation, showing how small forces can build up until they overcome even the toughest surface.

It’s the same principle behind earthquakes. Pressure builds slowly and quietly along a fault line for years, until it finally releases all at once.

Huge thanks to .Heinemann.official for keeping count and building the suspense, and to the students at Chinchilla State School who joined us to witness the big bang πŸ’₯
