As a licensee, it is important to ensure you don't request more than the maximum amount for a deposit.
Under Queensland law, the maximum deposit you can request from a customer is tied to the contract value:
➡️Contracts valued $3,300 or less - up to 20% of the contract price
➡️Contracts valued between $3,301 and $19,999 - 10% of the contract price
➡️Contract valued more than $20,000 - 5% of the contract price.

Getting deposits and progress claims right protects your client, supports your home warranty cover obligations, and keeps you on the right side of compliance.

Buying off‑the‑plan and noticed a 'sunset clause'? Here’s what it really means ☀️

Sunset clauses are commonly included when you’re buying off-the-plan land, a house and land package, or a new apartment.

A sunset clause sets a deadline (the ‘sunset date’) for when the development must be completed and the title registered. If this date isn’t met, either the buyer or the developer may have the right to cancel the contract.

⚠️ Why this matters
In some cases, a contract can be terminated even after you’ve waited months (or years). If property values have risen, the developer may be able to resell the property at a higher price.

Thinking about adding a tiny home to your property? 🏡

Before you buy, it’s important to understand how tiny homes are regulated in Queensland — and where the QBCC fits in.

Once a tiny home is fixed to land and used as a dwelling, it’s treated much like a traditional home. That means:
✅ You’ll need the right planning and building approvals (check with your local council first)
✅ Installation must be done by a QBCC licensee
✅ The work must meet National Construction Code (NCC) requirements

The QBCC also administers the Queensland Home Warranty Scheme (QHWS), which may protect home owners if something goes wrong with on‑site installation work (such as footings, tie‑downs or service connections). It’s important to know that the scheme doesn’t cover off‑site manufacturing or defective products — those are covered under consumer law instead.

The QBCC has identified three individuals suspected of unlicensed building activity following a recent audit across Maryborough.

Our officers conducted more than 130 licence checks at 50 active sites, uncovering:
🔎 Two individuals allegedly performing unlicensed work
🔎 One licensee suspected of engaging an unlicensed worker

While over 90% of licensees continue to do the right thing, even a small number of breaches can put home owners at risk. That’s why the QBCC will continue to take strong action where needed - to protect consumers and uphold the reputation of Queensland’s building industry.

Tradies! Are you owed money from a completed home or renovation project? You've got options, but there are strict timeframes you need to be aware of.

Adjudication is a fast‑track process that the QBCC offers to licensees to help resolve commercial payment disputes, without going through court. The timeframe that applies depends on your situation, so swipe through to check what applies to you 👉

⏱️ Remember: Applications need to hit the Registrar before 5pm AEST on a business day to count for that day.
