LGMA 2026 Annual Conference Update 📣 We are delighted to confirm that Hon Ann Leahy MP, Minister for Local Government and Water and Minister for Fire, Disaster Recovery and Volunteers, and Bronwyn Blagoev, Director-General of the Department of Local Government, Water and Volunteers, will join us at the LGMA Queensland 2026 Annual Conference.

Local Government Futures brings together council CEOs, senior managers and sector leaders at Sea World Resort on the Gold Coast from 8 to 10 September. Having the Minister and Director-General in the room reflects how closely the state and the sector are working on the challenges ahead, from workforce and capability through to disaster resilience and the long-term sustainability of councils.

They join a program that includes Professor Sohail Inayatullah and Jordana Borensztajn.

Local government leadership in action 👏 LGMA Queensland was proud to be part of the Queensland Prevention Symposium 2026 in Brisbane, with Tess Bishop moderating the session Creating Healthier Communities: Local Government Leadership in Action.
Tess was joined by Julie Blyth from Brisbane City Council, Jim Dixon from the City of Gold Coast and Professor Sharon Goldfeld from the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute for a valuable discussion about the role local government plays in improving the health and wellbeing of our communities.

The two-day Symposium brings together professionals from across government, academia, prevention, sport and the community to share ideas, evidence and initiatives that are helping build a healthier Queensland.

For LGMA Queensland, opportunities like this are incredibly valuable. They give us the chance to listen to our councils, hear firsthand about the work being delivered in our communities and better understand the challenges, innovation and leadership happening across the sector. It was inspiring to hear about the work councils are doing to create healthier communities and the very real outcomes being achieved.

Join LGMA for the Working Effectively with Government Workshop.

Every council has a list of things it needs from government. Funding for the road. A planning decision. A policy that reflects what regional communities experience. Most of those cases are well argued and evidence based, and many still go nowhere.

The reason is rarely the merit. Government runs to its own rhythms and structures, and knowing which agency owns the problem, when the budget and policy windows open, and how to present a case so it can be acted on quickly makes the difference between a proposal that progresses and one that sits.

This half day workshop demystifies that process. Between them, Tess and Di have worked every side of the table: the department that assesses the proposal, the ministerial office that decides its fate, and the peak body making the case.

Yesterday, LGMA Queensland President Daniel Fletcher represented our members at the public hearing for the Parliamentary Inquiry into the Operation and Effectiveness of the Councillor Conduct Framework in Queensland.

Daniel took the practical experience and perspectives of Queensland’s local government professionals directly to the Committee, reinforcing the need for a framework that retains independent oversight for serious matters while being more preventative, proportionate, timely and grounded in the realities of council governance.

LGMA Queensland also highlighted the broader impact conduct matters can have on leadership, staff confidence, organisational stability and the ability of councils to focus on serving their communities.

Thank you to the members whose experience and insights helped shape our submission and the issues raised at the hearing.

Our advocacy continues as the Inquiry progresses.
