📣 TERN Australia, the national capability for monitoring change in terrestrial and coastal ecosystems, is pleased to announce the membership of its newly appointed Advisory Board, effective August 2026.

The Board is chaired by Dr Les Trudzik and includes Professor Paul Bonnington, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research Infrastructure) at the University of Queensland, as the nominee of TERN’s Lead Agent, together with four new Members appointed following a national expression of interest process: Professor Margaret Byrne PSM, Mr Glenn Cockerton, Mr Michael Grundy and Professor Graciela Metternicht.

Managing and understanding water resources requires data on latent heat flux dynamics across climatic zones at scales from regions to continents in both space and time.

Having spatially and temporally dynamic estimates of latent heat flux and sensible heat flux for all of Australia, means this data source can be used to model the water and energy dynamics of any ecosystem, catchment, or land management unit in Australia.

🔓️🌏️ NCRIS is helping unlock new insights into the Earth's Critical Zone—the foundation of life on our planet.

Professor David Chittleborough, Adelaide University and University of the Sunshine Coast, is working with collaborators across Australia to build the Australian Critical Zone Observatory Network, improving our understanding of how carbon, water, nutrients and energy move through the dynamic, life-sustaining, near-surface environment extending from the vegetation canopy down to unweathered bedrock. NCRIS-funded Providers Terrestrial Ecosystem Research Network and AuScope are supporting this work by combining long-term and innovative above and below-ground monitoring systems to better understand how this critical zone is responding to a warming climate.

The Australian Government Department of Education’s National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS) program is a $4 billion program that provides Australian researchers with access to the tools, equipment, data, and services they use for their world-class research.
