Today marks the anniversary of the 1992 Mabo decision which was a landmark moment that recognised Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ enduring connection to, and rights over, our land.

Each year on 3 June, Mabo Day honours Mer Island man Eddie Koiki Mabo, whose determination helped overturn the legal fiction of terra nullius and the false idea that this land belonged to no one.

Eddie Koiki Mabo was a proud Torres Strait Islander, a fighter for justice, and a true hero. He knew his people were the rightful custodians of their ancestral lands and stood strong in a nearly 10‑year legal battle to prove it.

Although Eddie sadly passed away in January 1992 and he did not live to see the High Court’s historic decision handed down on 3 June that same year. His legacy then led to the Native Title Act (1993), creating a path for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to claim their land rights.

While the fight for land rights continues, today we remember and honour Eddie Koiki Mabo, a man whose strength changed the course of our history.

His legacy lives on.

Traineeships are a great way to start your career journey by combining study with on-the-job training. Our Traineeship Mentor Layeka began her journey this way and now supports the next generation of future leaders as they pave their own career paths. Check out Layeka's story and see what our traineeships are all about 📚🌱

Our new Traineeship Mentor Layeka has a strong motivation to support trainees that partly stems from having walked the path herself.
