The Planetarium is open to the public from 9:00am to 4:00pm daily during Queensland school holidays. Closed on Mondays during school term and closed all public holidays. Well, the clouds did finally cooperate yesterday, allowing a view of Venus in daylight. It will remain visible for a while, but become harder to see as Venus draws closer to the Sun from our viewpoint - and of course, without the Moon nearby as a handy guide.

Here's two photos from yesterday: one in daylight, and one near the end of twilight. In daylight, the crescent shape of Venus is hinted at.

Our next from the Artemis II images comes from Renee, one of our astronomy presenters, highlighting her favourite aspects of the Orion space capsule.

It's such a fantastic perspective. Earth - the thing that is barely noticeable - is in reality over 2 MILLION times wider than the Orion space capsule. The capsule's oversized presence in the photo practically symbolises its significance to the astronauts. It was the only thing that lay between them and the harsh emptiness of space. On Earth, we have the luxury of a thick atmosphere, plenty of food and water, and even a magnetic field to shield us from the Sun’s occasional flareups. But all those life-sustaining resources were too far away to be of any use to them. Instead, they had to rely on human ingenuity and whatever their 9 cubic metres of living space could provide.

Normally, the only astronomical objects you're likely to see in the daytime are the Sun and Moon. Sometimes though, it's possible to see Venus, and with our sister planet now approaching her brightest, it's a good time to try to spot her. In particular, tomorrow offers a handy helper in the form of the crescent Moon, just 5 degrees away - within the field of view of typical low-powered binoculars.

Here are three charts showing where to look, at 11 am, 1 pm, and 3 pm, though any time after about 10 am would be worth trying. Your best chance of success will be by hiding the Sun behind a building or other fixed object, then locating the Moon; about 2-3 finger-widths farther away, with your arm stretched out, you should be able to see Venus with the unaided eye, in a clear sky.

Venus will remain visible in the evening sky for just another few weeks, disappearing into the Sun's glare in mid-October before reappearing in the morning sky in early November.

Our next feature is ‘D’ for ‘Dwarf’ ✨

The Solar System contains various types of space objects: comets were once thought to be an atmospheric phenomenon, and asteroids, first discovered in the 19th century. Planets have been observed for thousands of years and when the telescope was invented, it showed they are different to stars, revealing disks of varying appearances instead of just points of light. An extra layer of complexity was added to the Solar System when Galileo discovered moons around Jupiter, showing that not everything orbited the Earth or the Sun.

A greater understanding of the Sun’s family came from discoveries of new planets - Uranus and Neptune in the 18th and 19th century, and the 20th century brought the discovery of Pluto and planetary exploration by spacecraft, further expanding our knowledge of the Solar System. Still, it was all pretty straightforward, in terms of the known classes of object, but that changed in the 21st century.

3 objects were found beyond Neptune in 2005 and were named Eris, Haumea, and Makemake. After studying these objects, it was thought that Eris was larger and more massive than Pluto, but this created a problem... Nobody was going to call Eris a planet with its tilted and very elliptical orbit, but if Eris wasn’t a planet, what was Pluto?

The word planet originally meant wanderer (from the Greek, planetes), and even Jupiter’s moons were sometimes referred to as planets. Despite all the study of the planets though, nobody had formally defined what a planet was. In 2006, the outcome was that ‘planets’ referred to the eight large objects from Mercury to Neptune, with a new category, dwarf planet, being created to include Pluto, Eris, Haumea, Makemake, and the first object discovered in the asteroid belt, Ceres.

The formal definition for dwarf planet is a celestial body that is in orbit around the Sun, has sufficient mass that it is or almost is a round shape, has not cleared the neighbourhood around its orbit, and is not a satellite. Meaning, a dwarf planet is a round object, larger than about 1,000 km, orbiting the Sun, but may share its orbit with other large objects. In the special case of Haumea, it is rounded, but not spherical.

Step outside and look up into the sky to discover this month's Astro Highlights:

🪐 Venus is still appearing brighter as it draws closer to Earth. See it drift past Virgo’s bright star, Spica, in the first few days of the month.
🪐7 September: Early risers will find the Moon and Mars close in northeast at 3:15am with Jupiter following them about 90 minutes later.
🪐9 September: Jupiter will be close to the Moon and can be seen low towards the east in morning twilight.
🪐 By mid-month, Saturn and Venus both visible around 8pm with Venus in the west and Saturn in the east. Jupiter will also be rising before the morning twilight.
🪐12 September: A very thin crescent Moon near Mercury may be visible at around 6:10pm.
🪐14 September: If the day is clear, look for the crescent Moon to the east of the Sun where Venus should be visible, just slightly to the right of the Moon. After sunset, Venus can be seen just above the crescent Moon.
🪐 Mercury will be more visible towards end of the month, right below Venus.
🪐 27 September: Saturn will be close to the Moon and can be seen low in the east as twilight ends.

Our next feature is ‘C’ for ‘Comet’ ✨

Comet, shooting star, meteorite… What’s the difference? 🤔

A shooting star, or meteor, typically appears and fades in less than a second. It's the streak of heated atmosphere created by a small fragment of space rock (a meteoroid) ploughing into Earth’s atmosphere at high speed. A meteorite is a fragment of a large meteoroid or asteroid that has not burned up completely, and lands on Earth. Random meteors and meteorites may come from the population of meteoroids and asteroids orbiting the Sun, from asteroid impacts with planets and other asteroids, or from comets. Speaking of which...

A comet is something quite different. It’s an icy body rather than rocky or metallic, perhaps smaller than a kilometre across, though sizes of a few kilometres are common. When far from the Sun, beyond the outer planets, they are typically invisible, being small and dark (comet Halley is currently just beyond the orbit of Neptune, and you would need a long exposure with a very large telescope, to show even just a small fuzzy dot). As comets approach the Sun, the ice can melt*, releasing trapped dust and gas to form the characteristic tail**.

There are many comets in the inner Solar System each year, but very few reach naked-eye brightness. There have been no great comets seen in our skies since the 19th century, with obvious tails stretching across the sky. Comets Hale-Bopp and McNaught, in 1997 and 2007, were among the best we’ve seen in the last few decades.

Some comets have been seen in the inner Solar System more than once and are known as periodic comets. Their reappearances can be predicted with reasonable accuracy, but some comets appear for the first time, not to return for thousands or millions of years. Comet Halley’s next return will be in 2061, when it should be seen in our evening sky in July and August.

It is thought that perhaps more than a trillion comets are to be found in the Oort Cloud—the outer region of the Solar System, extending more than a quarter of the distance to the nearest star.

From July 2025, astronomers have been observing an interstellar comet, 3I/ATLAS, which passed through the inner Solar System a few months later. This is the third interstellar object that we have found and may indicate comets are regularly “shared” between nearby stars. Based on analysis of its chemistry, astronomers believe it could be more than twice as old as our Solar System.

* Strictly speaking, the ice “sublimes” or “sublimates”, passing straight from a solid to a gas.

** Comets can have both dust and gas tails, sometimes appearing separate, depending upon their motion relative to Earth and the Sun.

Our first from the Artemis II images come from Peter, one of our astronomy presenters, who has shared a little insight into this spectacular solar eclipse.

“I do like a good solar eclipse. It's become a bit of a hobby of mine to travel the world and watch this fantastic spectacle of nature. The crew of Artemis II saw the ultimate solar eclipse when they were about 400,000 km from Earth, which is a bit too far for my travel plans! From their vantage point, they viewed the eclipse without Earth’s atmosphere in the way.

During totality on Earth, the Sun is eclipsed for just a few minutes (3 to 5 minutes being the usual). The crew of Artemis II had almost a whole hour of totality and were able to see something unusual. Surrounding the Moon is a football-shaped glow. This could be one of two things: the Sun's faint outer atmosphere (the corona), or something called the Zodiacal Light. I've been fortunate to have seen both things and am thinking it's the Zodiacal Light, but as the astronauts were not equipped with the sort of instruments that could analyse that glow, it is not yet clear which it is.

The Solar System is a very dusty place and the dust, over millions of years, has settled into a disk that surrounds the Sun. That disk is in line with the Earth's orbit. If you are in a place with a very clear, dark sky, you will be able to see the Zodiacal Light about an hour after sunset. The bright glare of the Sun is no longer dominating the sky, and this will allow you to see the soft, white glow of sunlight that has been scattered by the dust. You will see the glow as a long, thin pillar coming up from the horizon at the same place the Sun went down. Its alignment with the direction of the Sun’s motion through the zodiac is why it's called the Zodiacal Light.

For the crew of Artemis II, the Moon blocked the glare of the Sun. The soft glow has a pronounced, localised brightening on either side of the Moon which reminds me of the pillars of light that the Zodiacal Light forms.

A lot of people will, no doubt, think this image is AI. It's not. It's simply nature at its best!”

Discover a sky full of endless stars and planets this month as you look up and see our Astro Highlights:

⚪ Venus is approaching its peak brightness and sets around 8:45pm this month.
🦂 Look almost directly overhead throughout August and see red supergiant star Antares, the heart of the scorpion. From the centre of Brisbane in mid-month, it will be one degree from the zenith around the end of twilight.
🌙 16 Aug: if it’s a clear day, look north to northeast for the crescent Moon from late morning to early afternoon, and Venus should be visible nearby without a telescope. Setting almost side-by-side, around 8:50 pm.
🔴 Mars is moving noticeably east against the stars from one night to the next, sitting low in the northeast as morning twilight begins, throughout the month.
🪐 By the end of August, Saturn will rise just after 8pm, sitting almost exactly opposite Venus in the sky.

We’ve officially completed one round of our series, are you ready for round 2?

We’re continuing this content series each fortnight and will be bringing you some more of our favourite astronomy terminology, starting back at ‘A’ and going right through to ‘Z’.

Our next feature is ‘A’ for ‘Astronomy / Astrology’. ✨

Which is which? Is there a difference?

Astronomy is the study of the motions and physical characteristics of objects beyond Earth’s atmosphere including planets, stars, galaxies, and more! However, sometimes some of those objects enter our atmosphere, as meteors, and reach the ground, as meteorites. It is a scientific discipline that represents our understanding of the Universe, how it came to be, how it works and attempts to explain it by mathematical models and physical laws. Astronomy is practised and supported by the collection of data (observations), and by the construction of theories and hypotheses that are subjected to test – does theory match what we observe?

Astrology though is the supposed ability to predict events and personal traits, based upon when someone was born, where the Sun was in the sky, and the motions of the planets in the present day. However, it has no relation to astronomical science.

Early astronomers were effectively astrologers by trying to find meaning in the sky. Over time, observers and theorists moved away from superstition and supposition by trying to find rational explanations for what they saw happening, leading to abandoning beliefs like the stars are gods, everything moves around Earth, eclipses and comets could be bad omens, and so on.
