We invite you to participate in a survey led by Dr Anna Mikhaylova at the University of Queensland, “Bridging the Perspectives: Community Language Schools Project” with support from Ethnic Schools Association of Queendland. The project explores what supports you, what matters most, and the challenges you face in passing on your community language. Share your thoughts in our anonymous survey.

We are pleased to be welcoming Dr Lilian Fleuri as our meeting presenter at the upcoming members meeting on April 1st.

Dr Fleuri, is a linguist and expert in heritage language acquisition, bilingualism, and community language education. She has lectured at Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (Brazil), Middlebury College (USA), and The University of Queensland (Australia). She founded and coordinated Raízes Brasileiras, a Brazilian community school in Brisbane (2016–2022), supporting hundreds of families in raising bilingual children.

Her recent publication, “The Profile of the Brazilian Diaspora in Australia and its Community Organizations for Language and Cultural Maintenance”, examines Brazilian community efforts to maintain language and culture in Australia. She also co-authored Learning from Brazilian Indigenous Peoples: Towards a Decolonial Education, highlighting culturally responsive and decolonial approaches to education.

She currently teaches Portuguese and Spanish online and offers workshops for families and communities, supporting them in understanding how language acquisition works and how to foster and sustain bilingual development at home and within community contexts.
