On the edge of the mighty southern ocean lies the tiny town of Bremer Bay, Western Australia. Surrounded by the UNESCO Fitzgerald Biosphere Reserve, the area is internationally recognised for it’s pristine state and high biological diversity. With many species found nowhere else on earth, pristine beaches, and it’s rugged and spectacularly beautiful coastline, Bremer Bay is a dream destination for nature and adventure lovers alike. Sixty kilometres offshore lies a less well known ecological treasure. Where the Australian continental shelf plummets to the deep ocean the Bremer Canyon lies. Encounter one of the most astonishing aggregations of marine life anywhere in the world. It is one of the most amazing places on earth, and the only place you can reliably encounter killer whales (orca), and the largest toothed predator to have ever lived, the sperm whale. Orca often approach and surround our vessel in clearly mutual fascination. You may even see them hunting, bodies transformed to deadly black and white missiles that rocket through the ocean, while seabirds fill the sky when the hunt is a success. Watch in awe as a sperm whale breaches, it’s 50 ton body landing in a storm of whitewater, the ultimate bombie! In complete contrast, a maternal herd of sperm whale mothers and calves may be seen peacefully logging at the surface like a fleet of haphazardly parked buses. Delight in the sight of a family of long-finned pilot whales, a creche of calves tucked safe within the extended family pod. Hear the underwater symphony from our hydrophone, the sounds of vocalising whales or dolphins filling the air on deck. These are just a few of the breathtaking moments captured forever in the minds eye of our guests. You will never be more awed by our amazing blue planet.

Did you know❓️

Did you know.... Orcas are actually the largest species of dolphin - not whales 🖤

Even though they’re commonly called “killer whales,” orcas belong to the dolphin family and are the BIGGEST dolphins in the world.

So why are they called “killer whales”❓️
The name originally came from ancient sailors who watched orcas hunt large whales in groups and called them “whale killers.” Over time, the phrase was flipped around to become “killer whale.”

Orcas sit at the absolute top of the marine food chain and have no natural predators of their own!

Why do orcas jump out of the water/ breach?

A full breach, when more than two-thirds of a whale’s body launches out of the water, is one of the most spectacular behaviours to witness in the wild. But why do they do it?
The honest answer is… we don’t quite know. But scientists do have a few strong theories:

🐋 Communication: the impact creates a powerful sound above and below the surface, sometimes triggering “response breaches” from other whales nearby.

🐋 To shake off parasites: a giant splash might be the perfect way to scratch an itch.

🐋 And sometimes… simply for fun. Orcas and other whales and dolphins are highly playful animals, using play to strengthen social bonds, build muscle, and practise important life skills.

Whatever the reason, witnessing a breach never gets old! Have you seen one before?
