Coming from a family of farmers and small business owners, I am appalled by the fire levy passed by Labor and the Greens today. This policy is a blatant slap in the face to rural communities—communities that already carry more than their fair share without seeing a fair return.

We are the ones who manage vast, fire-prone landscapes and often serve as the first line of defence when fires break out. Yet under this new levy, we’re being punished with higher costs while receiving fewer services than our urban counterparts.

This decision highlights a complete disconnect from the realities of rural life and the economic pressures we are facing: a drought that won’t break—and that the state government won’t even acknowledge; skyrocketing fodder prices; rising costs for fuel, power, wages, and insurance. And now we’re expected to fund a system that too often overlooks us when disaster strikes.

Today, Labor and the Greens have made one thing clear: they’re happy to profit off the back of the bush while offering little in return. Rural communities won’t forget this betrayal.
