Misophonia can be difficult to understand from the outside because the trigger may seem so small.
Chewing, breathing, tapping, sniffing or repetitive sounds can provoke an immediate and intense reaction — tension, anger, panic, disgust or an overwhelming need to escape.
For a child experiencing it, this isn’t simply “being annoyed by a noise”. Their body can react before they have had time to think, explain or regulate what is happening.
And afterwards, many children may feel guilty or embarrassed about how strongly they reacted.
Sometimes the most helpful thing we can do is believe them, reduce shame and help them find ways to cope with triggering situations.
What sounds small to us can feel enormous on the inside.
