Jo has lived in the local area with her family since 2005. She is very passionate about her community and has been a committed local volunteer in various capacities. Jo would would be honoured to have the opportunity to r
epresent the interests of the community, as she believes she has an understanding of its strengths and areas for development. Jo will bring a new voice to the decision-making process, to help make this area be the best it can be for everyone. She is a hard worker, starting with her Bachelor's degree in Science, Honours Geology and then on to a Masters in Environmental Studies along with graduate qualifications in Business Management and Community Cultural Development. This has lead to more than twenty-five years' experience working mostly in the public sector in a variety of roles including experience in the local government sector. Jo has been an active community connector in the area on environmental and social justice issues. Jo has campaigned against overdevelopment and against the loss of important public transport routes. In various volunteer roles, Jo has applied for and been successful in bringing thousands of dollars worth of grant funding into the community to improve local natural assets. Jo is also an active volunteer in the school and sporting club community. Jo believes that Bayside Council can strive to be a leader locally on important issues that will affect our future. This includes advocating to transform key services that can reduce carbon emissions such as waste management services. This also includes supporting small businesses that make our shopping areas unique as well as empowering local groups to further create community connections. Jo is driven to bettering the quality of life for locals by improving facilities, championing fair and sustainable improvements and creating a more liveable neighbourhood with easy access to recreation and cultural amenities. Jo commits to applying her skills in a genuine effort to represent the whole Bayside community. ABOUT ANN: Ann, her husband Tony and their two daughters moved to Bardwell Valley in 1991 and after building a house lived there for 24 years, 6 years ago Ann and Tony downsized to an apartment in Wolli Creek. Ann retired from the ANZ Bank after a career spanning 18 years, her final years working as Assistant Branch Manager. As workers’ rights are very important to Ann she was an active member of the Finance Sector Union and acted as the ANZ Employee Representative during award negotiations at ANZ Head Office. Upon retirement Ann was awarded lifetime membership of the FSU. Today Ann holds the voluntary position of Secretary on the board of the Discovery Point Co-operative, Wolli Creek (nearly 4,000 residents). The installation of the pedestrian crossing in front of Wolli Creek Station was achieved through Ann’s negotiation with Bayside Councillors. As environmental issues are of particular concern to Ann she joined the Wolli Creek Preservation Society in 1988 when the society was fighting to prevent the building of a highway through the Wolli Creek Valley. Ann continues her involvement as Coordinator of Wolli Creek Birdos eight survey teams and recently had success in applying for a small council grant to install ten Bird Boxes on Bardwell Valley Golf Course. ABOUT CHAO: Chao has been a South Sydney activist for more than 15 years since he moved to Sydney from Brisbane. Having resided in Kensington and Mascot, Chao is acutely aware of the issues and challenges facing our area, such as the quality and appropriateness of development, traffic congestion, availability of public amenities, community infrastructure such as cycle ways, and community services such as childcare. Professionally, Chao is an actuary working in the insurance industry and Chao has volunteered extensively with the local actuarial professional body. Chao is a passionate supporter of the South Sydney Rabbitohs and the Australian Cricket team. Chao is a father of one.
