The Maroochy Wetlands Sanctuary is alive with diversity. From tiny invertebrates hidden in the wetland fern, to frogs, birds, fish, and reptiles moving through the water and vegetation, each creature plays a role in this living system.

Together, they create a rich web of life that makes the wetlands such a vital and extraordinary place. πŸŒΏπŸ’§πŸ¦‹

How special is this 😍

Last month, a family of sugar gliders was spotted nesting in a box at the Maroochy Wetlands Sanctuary - a first for the area!

This surprise find is extra special because our wetlands are mostly home to mangroves, not a vegetation structure that sugar gliders prefer. But tucked among some paperbark trees in the area, these gliders found a cosy spot!

Did you know?
πŸƒ Sugar Gliders can glide up to 90 metres between trees!
πŸƒ These social animals live in family groups called clans or colonies.
πŸƒ Their diet includes nectar, pollen, and seeds, making them important pollinators, especially for banksias.
πŸƒ They’re nocturnal, sleeping by day in leafy nests inside tree hollows…or in nest boxes when hollows are hard to find. That’s why our Nest Box Monitoring Project is a big deal! When nature’s real estate is tight, we’re building glider-friendly rentals and tracking who moves in!.

🌸 Our Spring 2025 Nest Box Monitoring season is nearly over, but if you’re keen to get involved, volunteer spots will reopen early next year for Autumn. Stay tuned!
