“I started out as a Marine Biologist and somehow ended up working in addiction medicine.” 🐬

This week’s Human of Health, Dr Matt, started his journey into medicine a little later than most.

He initially completed his training in the Northern Territory where he stayed to work in Aboriginal Medical Services. Following that, he found his passion for supporting people with substance dependence while working in a rehabilitation centre in New South Wales.

Now in Queensland, Dr Matt is a Senior Medical Officer in the Alcohol and Other Drugs (AOD) Service, supporting people experiencing challenges related to alcohol and drug use.

“It’s a real privilege to support people during some of the most difficult periods of their lives and to walk alongside them as they achieve changes they may never have thought possible.”

That, combined with a team who demonstrate a seemingly endless supply of empathy, patience and commitment, “creates a work environment unlike any other.”

The only thing Dr Matt enjoys more than his meaningful work with his incredible team, is spending time with his family. 🫶

And in the limited time that remains, he loves a board game, riding his mountain bike and “playing badminton with a level of enthusiasm that greatly exceeds [his] actual ability.” 🏸

We’re so grateful for your uncapped compassion for our community, Dr Matt!

Congratulations to Dr Catherine, the inaugural recipient of the Dr John Osborne Research Excellence Award! 🏆

The award honours the legacy of Dr John Osborne, an outstanding researcher, educator and mentor who made an extraordinary contribution to Allied Health research at Sunshine Coast Health and beyond.

Dr Cath is a highly deserving inaugural recipient, recognised for her commitment to research excellence, collaboration and improving healthcare through evidence, inquiry and innovation.

Her work includes research into diet quality and plant-based dietary approaches for people living with chronic kidney disease, alongside mentoring the next generation of clinician researchers and building strong research partnerships across Queensland.

Congratulations Cath on this wonderful achievement👏

John’s passion for supporting clinicians to embrace research and improve patient care continues through this award and the people it recognises. 💙

Esther is off to explore how world leading trauma practices might be implemented here in Australia! ✈️

Next year, our Clinical Nurse Consultant from our Trauma Service will visit leading centres and organisations in:

🚲 Denmark
🥝 New Zealand
🍫 Sweden
⛰️ Switzerland
☕ United Kingdom
🍀 Northern Ireland
🗽 United States

Esther will be investigating international models of wrap-around and holistic support that promote long-term recovery following major injury.

“My vision is to see advancement in this service area, to foster connection, empowerment and hope after injury, and to contribute to a future where everyone has the opportunity not only to recover, but to lead a meaningful and fulfilling life beyond traumatic injury.”

This remarkable opportunity comes from the Churchill Fellowship, which is awarded to people who demonstrate passion, leadership and a commitment to making a meaningful difference to Australian society.

We’re so proud of Esther and her commitment to improving patient care for us on the Coast, and all over Australia. 🫶

16,000 blood donors are needed as Lifeblood reserves have fallen to the lowest level in almost a decade.

A prolonged cold and flu season has resulted in fewer donations, lower booking numbers and increased cancellations, while demand remains high.

This is Ricky and Dr Bec. 👋

Dr Bec is a Rural Generalist with specialised skills in palliative care, who has started a clinic at Maleny Soldier’s Memorial Hospital to help palliative patients stay in their homes longer, and not have to travel long distances for support.

Ricky’s husband Joe, a well-known Irish poet and comedian, was one of the first to be seen as an outpatient at the clinic.

As Joe’s journey continued, Dr Bec was able to provide nearby medical support until he came into Maleny hospital as an inpatient.

Ricky was grateful for the serenity of the Maleny Soldier’s Memorial Hospital setting, where they could go for little walks and chat while sitting on the bench listening to the birds.

“I think it was just beautiful, it was dignified, calm.” 💛

If you’ve been lucky enough to encounter this week’s Human of Health, you’d know Bekki has a way of bringing out the best in everyone around her. ✨

As the Senior Director of Communications and Engagement, Bekki somehow keeps an enormous number of plates spinning, while remaining thoughtful, authentic and funny!

A colleague nominated Bekki as a Human of Health, describing her as someone who “leads with empathy and genuinely cares about people, and makes a positive difference to those around her”.

As a leader, Bekki brings heart, humour and energy to her role. She listens, she cares, she backs her people and best of all, she brings the ‘fun’ into everything she does.

We’re lucky to have you, Bekki. 💛

Today we honour the babies we only knew about for a moment. Those who never arrived in our arms. Those who arrived but couldn’t stay. Those who stayed, but only for a short time. 💜

We grieve the life we imagined with them. The heartbreak that persists.

There is no right way to feel, and no right way to heal.

We see you, and tonight we’ll light a candle in remembrance of these little lives we love. 🕯️

Happy Allied Professions Day! 💙

They’re the physiotherapists helping you get back on your feet, the speech pathologists supporting you to communicate, the dietitians helping you make the most of your nutrition and so many more professionals making a difference across our health service every day. 💪

Today, we celebrated the incredible work they do with our Allied Health Awards ceremony, recognising the people who go above and beyond to care for our patients, support their colleagues, embrace new ideas and improve the health and wellbeing of our community. 👏

A huge congratulations to our award winners and a big thank you to all our physios, occupational therapists, speech pathologists, dietitians, psychologists, podiatrists, exercise physiologists and allied health professionals across Sunshine Coast Health. 🥳
