On behalf of Closeburn Brigade, we share our deep sadness at the passing of First Officer John Blake of Clear Mountain Rural Fire Brigade.

John was a firefighter who served with quiet strength, steady leadership and genuine care for others. He was the kind of officer people trusted. He led by example, treated people fairly, and always carried himself with honesty and humility.

John gave a great deal to his brigade and to his community. It was about turning up, doing the work, and standing beside his crew when it mattered. That is how many of us will remember him.

He was respected not only for the role he held, but for the person he was. Kind, dependable and decent. John made a lasting impact on those who served with him and those who had the privilege of knowing him.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to Kerri and the Blake family, and to all members who served alongside him over the years.

Rest easy, John. Thank you for your service. You will be remembered with great respect.

National Road Safety Week (NRSW) is an annual initiative from the Safer Australian Roads and Highway (SARAH) Group, partnering with government and road safety advocates, to highlight the impact of road trauma and ways to reduce it.

❗️Emergency services attend thousands of road traffic crashes in Queensland each year, many of which are preventable.

❗️National Road Safety week is an opportunity for everybody to consider their actions behind the wheel and reflect on the impact this can have on themselves, their loved ones, and the broader community.

❗️Road crash rescue (RCR) is a significant part of QFD’s workload, using a range of specialist rescue equipment and specific techniques to free people trapped in vehicles.

We all have a responsibility to take road safety seriously, this Queensland Road Safety Week, and beyond.

Take a good look at this photo. This is a Queensland bush home, it could be any one of ours. Now ask yourself a simple question: what would worry you if a bushfire were coming today?

Start at the roof: Leaves and debris sit in valleys and along edges, this is where embers land and ignite.

Check around the verandah and walls: Furniture and materials (gas bottles) sit close to the structure.

Look under the house: Open subfloor areas and stored items give embers a place to lodge. Once fire gets underneath, it is hard to stop.

Look at the grass and vegetation: Long, dry fuel runs right up to the house. Fire follows fuel.

Look at the driveway: Does it restrict access to the property for a fire appliance?

If this were your home, what would you fix first? What could you do this weekend to lower the risk? What would give firefighters a better chance to help you?

Drop your observations in the comments. You might spot something that helps a neighbour prepare.

If you would like a second set of eyes, we can help. Our brigade can arrange a home visit to walk through simple, practical steps to reduce bushfire risk. Fill out the form here https://www.closeburnrfb.org/contact-us
