HUW DAVIES DAY TRAINING EVENT 2026

This past weekend, all of the Shire Bush Fire Brigades came together for the annual Huw Davies Day Training Event, a great day of training, teamwork, challenge and plenty of friendly competition.

The day kicked off with breakfast at Upper Chittering BFB, followed by a welcome and briefing for all crews. Each brigade then nominated a crew leader, who attended a tasking briefing before crews headed off in different directions to tackle the day’s challenges.

Over the course of the day, crews rotated through four different scenarios, with each team given approximately 45 minutes before moving on together to their next challenge.

This year’s four training events were; Car Accident, Drafting, Stubble Burn and Overhead Standpipe / Hydrant.

These practical exercises provide an important opportunity for our volunteers to put their skills into practice, work together as a team and prepare for the wide range of incidents they may be called upon to attend.

After completing all four challenges, crews returned to Upper Chittering BFB for a well-earned BBQ lunch, final debrief and, of course, the presentation of the Huw Davies Trophy.

Congratulations to the Upper Chittering 4.4B crew, this year’s Huw Davies Day winners!

A huge thank you to everyone who took part, helped organise the day and supported our volunteer firefighters.

Days like this are a great reminder of the dedication, training and teamwork that goes on behind the scenes to keep our communities safe.

AUTHOR TALK AND BOOK SIGNING

Join local author Kathleen O'Reilly Johnston as she shares the story of 'Johno' at the Bindoon Library on Wednesday, 7 October at 6pm.

The world is a dangerous place for a child when no one's watching.
In post–World War II Scotland, a seven-year-old boy should be walking to school. Instead, he’s shipped off to Australia.
Trapped in a world of anger and violence with nowhere to turn, young Johno clings to the hope that a policeman might help him. But life has other plans.
Decades later, after years of denial by governments and cover-ups by institutions, Johno begins to uncover the truth about his past – and the web of lies that shaped his childhood.
A journey marked by cruelty and kindness, love and war, and above all, the enduring strength of the human spirit.

This is a story that is close to the hearts of our local community and has left its mark on so many. A dark past, scars and trauma, but also hope, resilience, and determination. Please note that topics of a sensitive nature will be addressed, so please reach out to library staff for potential triggers prior to attending if you need.

Light refreshments will be served, as well as tea, coffee, and soft drinks.

Kathleen will have copies of her book available for purchase after her talk, and she is happy to sign them for you.
