We had to jump in on it!

Over the weekend, several of our members took part in the inaugural NSW SES Flood Rescue Challenge held at Penrith Whitewater Stadium.

Our team members were involved in a variety of roles including:
1x stand manager
3x in water operators (competitors)
2 x support/role playing casualties
showcasing the dedication and adaptability of Bayside’s Flood Rescue crews.

Our competitors were placed across three composite teams made up of operators from across the state, it was a fantastic opportunity to build on teamwork, skills, resilience, and friendships whilst taking part in the challenge.

Shout out to our unit commander managed who worked along side his fellow team mates to secure 2nd place.

We’re already looking forward to next year’s challenge! 💪🌊🧡

A Total Fire Ban will be in place tomorrow, Wednesday 22 October, for the Greater Sydney, Illawarra/Shoalhaven, Greater Hunter, Upper Central West Plains and North Western areas.

Hot, dry and windy conditions are forecast across most of the state, increasing the fire danger. Know your fire risk and what you will do if fire threatens. Report all unattended fires to Triple Zero (000).

For more information on Total Fire Ban rules, visit the website: www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/fdr

BE PREPARED!
We're expecting severe weather to hit us this afternoon!

A widespread storm outbreak is expected to develop over central and northern New South Wales this afternoon.

There is a risk of severe storms across the east and north of the state, including Wollongong, Sydney, the Central Coast and Newcastle.

Any severe storms today will carry the risk of large hail (2cm or more across) which can damage roofs, cars and crops, as well as damaging wind gusts, which can lead to power outages and property damage.

SEVERE WEATHER IS COMING ☔️

📲 Download the Hazards Near Me app or monitor the NSW SES and the Bureau of Meteorology websites to stay up to date with warnings.

Here’s what we’re expecting on Friday afternoon/evening:
🔸 Severe thunderstorms are likely in populated coastal areas with risks including damaging winds and large hailstones which may impact Metropolitan Sydney, Hunter and the Illawarra.
🔸 Isolated supercells are also a risk and may bring heightened impacts with destructive wind gusts and giant hailstones.

Get ahead of the forecast and make sure your home is prepared now:
🪑 Tie down any loose items in your yard (including trampolines)
🚗 Don’t park under trees or near powerlines. Park undercover if possible.
🌳 Trim branches and overhanging trees.
🏡 Clear gutters, downpipes and drains.

🛑 If you come across a flooded road, stop and find an alternative route.

📞 If you require assistance, call the NSW SES on 132 500. In life threatening situations, call Triple Zero (000).

Commencing Sunday morning, Bayside unit had one of our senior leadership team represent the unit at the Emergency Services Volunteers Memorial at Mrs Macquarie’s Point — taking a moment to honour those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in their service to others. 🧡

Not long after heading back toward the unit, a change in weather brought strong Westerly winds across Sydney, with the Bayside area recording the highest number of wind-related storm incidents in the metro zone. 🌬️🌳

Three teams worked through the afternoon and evening responding to requests for assistance — mostly in relation to trees down and roof damage. We backed that up again today with a teams tasked with assisting one of our neighbouring units with a large tree down against a house.

A big thank you to our dedicated volunteers who worked efficiently and professionally through the changing conditions to keep our community safe. 👏💪

Our Volunteers in Action! 🚨

In the last week, our members have been busy supporting a range of community activities and training. While there’s been no storm, flood or tsunami incidents, our team has still been out and about serving the community in other important ways.

🌊 Our members assisted at the International Canoe Federation Slalom World Championships in Penrith, providing in-water safety presence to ensure a safe and successful event.

🚗 Whilst travelling between two units, our members were also the first emergency service on scene at a motor vehicle accident on the Princes Highway in Tempe, providing initial assistance and traffic management until other emergency services arrived. Thankfully, everyone involved was okay.

🔥Last night, we continued to build our readiness with training in the use of flares and emergency locator beacons (PLB and EPIRB), keeping our skills sharp and our members prepared for any situation.

No matter the weather, our team remains dedicated and ready to help when needed. 🧡
