Good outcome for the long-term protection of our green wedge.

At Tuesday’s Council meeting, councillors voted down an officer recommendation to approve a large place of worship at 600 Cranbourne-Frankston Road, then supported an Alternate Motion moved by Cr Dave Perry - City of Casey to refuse the planning permit. The refusal was carried by a clear majority.

Let’s be clear, this decision is not about faith. It is about the ever-increasing gradual encroachment into our green wedge that must be protected. The proposal was of significant scale, a multi-level building, large car park, and tree removal on land that sits within the Western Port Green Wedge.

Residents have been clear they want a firm edge between urban and rural areas, and this application’s size and scale raised real concerns about maintaining that non-urban character.

I supported the refusal because protecting the green wedge values for future generations matters. Cumulative decisions like this, if allowed one by one, risk eroding what makes these areas special.

Thanks to Cr Perry for moving the Alternate Motion and to the majority of councillors who backed it. The community’s voice was heard.

Great news for our community.

At the September Council Meeting I moved Notice of Motion 3271 calling for data centre-specific planning rules and guaranteed community consultation, and I’m really pleased it passed with the full support of every councillor.

Across Melbourne’s growth corridors these facilities are increasing quickly with applications. While they bring investment and jobs, they also raise real questions about noise, land use, local amenity, and pressure on energy and water.

Right now the Victorian Planning Provisions have no clear policy for data centres, and in Precinct Structure Plan areas applications can proceed without public notice. That leaves residents locked out of decisions that affect their own neighbourhoods.

This motion sets three practical steps: • A structured 21-day public consultation so Casey residents can share their views by 30 November 2026.
• A letter from our CEO to the relevant Ministers asking for clearer State rules and mandatory public notice.
• Working with other growth councils and peak bodies to push for consistent, transparent planning standards.

It’s about giving our community a proper voice and making sure planning keeps pace with change. The feedback we gather will directly strengthen our advocacy for better planning policies going forward.

Importantly, this is about improving the broader planning framework – it does not determine the outcome of any individual application. Those continue through the normal statutory process.

Thanks to my fellow councillors for unanimously getting behind this motion.

Great news for our community.

Great news for our community!

A place many local residents have known and loved for years has now received official recognition, with Geographic Names Victoria formally gazetting the name Berwick Springs Reserve.

For many years, this wetland and reserve area has been a popular destination for walking, exercising and spending time with family and friends. While the name has long been part of our community’s identity, it had never been officially recognised until now.

I’m proud that council played a role in securing this outcome by seeking formal recognition of this well-known community name.

Officially recognising Berwick Springs Reserve helps preserve an important part of our local identity for future generations.

A place many local residents have known and loved for years has now received official recognition, with Geographic Names Victoria formally gazetting the name Berwick Springs Reserve.

For many years, the wetland and surrounding reserve area has been widely known as Berwick Springs Reserve, despite never having been formally named.

I am very pleased to let you know that Council has now written to Geographic Names Victoria to seek registration of the long-standing legacy name Berwick Springs Reserve, helping to give this much-loved local place the formal recognition it deserves.

If approved by the State, this is a chance to officially recognise a name that's already part of the local community and ensure its reflected consistently into the future.

During National Volunteer Week, the Community Services team brought everyone together to honour the amazing volunteers who keep Casey connected for our 2026 Volunteer Recognition Event. These generous people give their time, care and compassion every day to help older residents and vulnerable neighbours stay independent and less lonely.

A real highlight was celebrating our long-serving champions:

I know a lot of you are frustrated with this glass bin rollout. At Tuesday night’s council meeting, we made sure the community’s frustration was heard loud and clear about the State Government forcing glass-only kerbside bins on us.

We couldn’t stop the rollout, but I was pleased that my fellow councillors backed Deputy Mayor Cr Michelle Crowther’s Alternate Motion to fight for you and ease the financial hit on Casey families.

Here’s what we’re pushing for:

- Allow Councils the flexibility to pick the best and most affordable glass recycling solution for our residents.

- Expanding the Container Deposit Scheme to include w**e & spirit bottles (like nearly every other state), better recycling at a fraction of the cost.

- Consider other possible measures to reduce the extra cost to households.

We understand that glass recycling is important, but why is the State Government making us use the most expensive option? It just doesn’t make sense, especially under current financial pressures families are facing.

🌙 Lighting up Berwick Springs for our community

Great to see Berwick Springs Recreation Reserve included in Council’s Active After Dark program.

With the lights on during the evenings, this is a simple but effective way to make our local spaces safer and more inviting – giving residents more opportunities to stay active and connected over the winter months.

Whether it’s a walk, some casual exercise or spending time outdoors with family and friends, everyone is welcome. No bookings required – just head down and enjoy the space.
