Winter Fire Outlook from AFAC.

The AFAC Seasonal Bushfire Outlook for winter 2026 identifies a heightened risk of bushfire in NSW and WA.

See the full here: https://bit.ly/49mz2we

An increased risk of fire in winter has been identified across the northern parts of the Great Sandy Desert and surrounds in WA, and parts of central and northern NSW.

AFAC CEO Rob Webb said: “Communities are encouraged to be vigilant, even in areas of Australia that show a normal risk of fire this season. A dry winter could signal an early start to the bushfire period so stay connected to advice from your local fire services.”

The Seasonal Outlook is the culmination of a complex analysis by expert fire specialists across Australia, and climate prediction and fire weather experts from the Bureau of Meteorology.

Our brigade was represented by Senior Deputy Captain Ben and the Shoalhaven Chaplain and Brigade member Rob, who found the forum very useful and a great way to network with other brigade leaders.

Last night it was our regular training night and it was held at the station. We completed setups for car fires and hose lays. We also worked on nozzle pressures and flow rates, as well as crew tasking. It is great to see brigade members keen to increase their skill set. Thanks team and special thanks to our trainers.

Our brigade got the call last night to a fire in Jaspers Brush. It turned out to be a large pile burn. The burn was under control by the homeowners, but was called in due to its close proximity to a house structure.

Broughton Vale/Berry along with Shoalhaven Heads and Fire and Rescue 224 were paged due to the potential of this becoming a structure fire. However as the first brigade at the scene we quickly established that it was a burn that was under control and the other teams were stood down.
The homeowner had made a clearing and prepared a water supply to keep it controlled.

Unfortunately, nobody had let the RFS know that a burn was taking place.

Thus this is a timely reminder to anyone planning a pile burn to always notify the RFS should you be lighting up a fire of any scale.

Broughton Vale/Berry RFS Brigade was ably represented in the laying of our ANZAC Day wreath by Toby and Terry (our youngest and oldest brigade members). Thanks guys - you made us proud.
Another wonderful community event. We will remember the sacrifices of Australian military forces in times of War and conflict.
