Montreal Goldfield

Montreal Goldfield Montreal Goldfield is Australia's only Goldfield that goes into the sea. From 6 September 2022, Montreal Goldfield will be closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.

It has been more than 10 years since the Heritage Centre opened, and the native garden was long overdue for a makeover. Our “golden” planter boxes have been made and installed by Peter Baxter and Neilsons Mitre 10 Bermagui have donated beautiful grevilleas for each box, appropriately called “Canterbury Gold”.

Montreal Goldfield Management committee were pleased to welcome Councillor Helen O’Neill and Council administrator, Gabrielle Ward of the Bega Valley Shire Council to the planting.

A big thank you to everyone who has followed us on social media and all the volunteers and businesses that supported the Goldfield in 2025.

The volunteers had their Christmas function yesterday. Not all the volunteers could attend which was unfortunate because a wonderful spread of food and drinks were available.

Perhaps you might like to become a volunteer in 2026. Whatever your background, bring your skills and knowledge and enjoy our very friendly group. For more information, call Carolyne on 0402 064 802

Year 5 and 6 students from the Lumen Christi College visited the Goldfield in December. Besides a tour of the Goldfield, other activities included gold panning, Christmas craft, pen and ink writing and attendance at a 1880’s classroom.
Senior teacher Cristal Dinwoodie recommended the Goldfield experience for other schools.” Definitely, it’s a great experience and it’s gets the students immersed in the life of the goldfields”.
Sapphire Coast Buslines brought the students to the Goldfield.

The Woorayl Probus Club of Leongatha visited the Goldfield recently.
Because of the large number of guests, several guides were required. Some of the Probus members remained in the Heritage Centre and were treated to a documentary film about the history of the Goldfield. There were lots of smiling faces and positive comments from the group.
Spirit Travel and Tours arranged for the Probus Club to visit the Goldfield

Over 80 local residents filled the Bermagui Country Club auditorium to
attend the premier/launch of the new Montreal Goldfield film "Gold, was
the Cry!" Guest speaker, local historian Peter Lacey, emphasised the
need to preserve the Montreal site and encouraged the community to get
involved. A brief message from film maker, Hiromi Matsuoka, was read
out highlighting her pleasure in working with the current Montreal
volunteers, as well as the need for preservation of the site.

Montreal Management committee would like to invite interested local
residents to become volunteers. You may have a skill that we need (like
computer/IT skills!) or simply may be happy to do a bit of maintenance
around the site occasionally.

Please contact Secretary, Carolyne Banados on 0402064802 if you would
like to discuss becoming a volunteer.
