Harcourt's first orchards date from 1857. Yield was boosted by irrigation from the Barkers Creek Reservoir. After exportation to England in the 1880s, Harcourt apples gained an international reputation. They attracted the highest market prices in Europe in 1905. The region remains prime fruit growing area thanks to the Harcourt Pipeline securing the supply of water to the area.

Our biennial kangaroo population surveys are happening 5 to 30 September across Victoria.

The surveys are done from the air so helicopters will be flying at low altitudes and slow speeds to count kangaroos. Flights are carefully planned to avoid houses and livestock.

These surveys improve our understanding of Victoria's kangaroo population and help inform wildlife management decisions.

For further information, contact our Customer Contact Centre on 131 186.

Past survey reports are available at: https://www.wildlife.vic.gov.au/our-wildlife/kangaroos

Water storage levels for Friday 4 September 2026

Combined water storages at Lauriston, Upper Coliban, and Malmsbury Reservoirs: 99%, 68,924 megalitres.

Our water is a precious and finite resource. With the population in our region growing and our climate changing, water conservation is everybody's responsibility. Permanent Water Saving Rules apply when there are no water restrictions in place.

𝗗𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴?

We will be cleaning water mains in your area from 15 to 18 September.

This is one of the last steps before we bring the new Maiden Gully to Marong Pipeline online.

We regularly clean water mains using a mix of compressed air and water pushed through the pipes from fire hydrants in your street. Sometimes referred to as ‘air scouring’, the process is used to remove any natural build-up and ensure the quality of your drinking water.

You need to turn your water meter off at the ‘stop tap’ during your interruption time to prevent any sediment entering the pipes in your home. Your stop tap is located on the street side of your water meter.

Upper Coliban Reservoir was originally included in Joseph Brady’s design of the Coliban Scheme in 1862, but the Victorian Government could not afford to construct it until 1903 (after the ‘Federation Drought’). The storage’s by-washes feature ‘Monier Bridges’ of early-reinforced concrete, designed by Sir John Monash.
