We often talk about the environment as the third teacher, but children’s voices are an important part of shaping that environment too.

This week, our Barramul and Garuk children have been busy helping transform their outdoor spaces, digging, planting, moving natural materials and deciding how their play spaces come together.

When children have genuine opportunities to contribute to the places they play, they’re developing agency, belonging, responsibility, collaboration and a connection to their environment — all while doing what children do best… playing.

Because the best learning environments aren’t simply created for children.

They’re created with them. 💚

💛 Happy Early Childhood Educators’ Day! 💛

Today we celebrate the incredible educators who are the co-regulators, anchors, problem solvers, play advocates, cheer squads, scientists and so much more in the lives of our children. 🌱

But we thought… who better to tell us what makes our educators amazing than the children themselves? 🥹

Our Kinder children shared what they think of our outstanding educators — from making the best slime and playdough, to reading stories, making them laugh, helping them and giving the squishiest hugs. 💛

Their answers remind us that amongst all the important work our educators do, it’s often the smallest everyday moments and connections that children remember most.

To our incredible Flora Hill team — thank you for everything you bring to our children and families every single day.

🫧 Water Play 💦

Water play is always a favourite, but behind all the splashing, pouring and bubbles, there is deeper and more powerful learning happening. 💛

Water play is intentionally incorporated into our learning programs because it provides children with opportunities to explore, investigate, experiment and make discoveries through hands-on play.

As children scoop, pour, fill and empty different containers, they begin developing early mathematical concepts of volume and capacity, exploring cause and effect and problem-solving, while strengthening their fine-motor skills and coordination.

When children explore alongside their peers, the learning extends even further - strengthening communication, cooperation, turn-taking and shared thinking as they exchange ideas and learn from one another. 🌱

Our educators recently spent time reflecting on each part of our philosophy and asking an important question:

How do we make sure these aren’t just words on our wall, but something children and families experience every day?

Our children have been part of bringing our philosophy to life by sharing their perspectives, ideas and interpretations, making their voices visible within our centre. 🎨

Our families’ feedback has also driven us to reflect, grow and strengthen how our philosophy is experienced in practice every day.

Our philosophy will continue to grow and evolve alongside our community, because the voices of the people within our centre should always help shape the community we create. ❤️🫶🏻

Ever had one of those "What should I be doing with my child?" moments? You might already have the answer at home.

Earlier this year, every Goodstart family received a What & When for Families guide for each child. If it's been tucked away in a drawer since then, now might be the perfect time to pull it back out.

The guide is packed with simple, play-based activities that support your child's learning and development at home. Best of all, it's written in your child's voice, with ideas tailored to their age and developmental stage.

From singing songs with babies and playing peek-a-boo, to "I Spy" games, storytelling and treasure hunts with older children, the activities are designed to fit naturally into everyday moments you already share together.

We know learning doesn't only happen in the classroom. Those small moments at home can help build big communication, language and literacy skills.

🌿 Little hands, big learning. 💛

There’s something special about seeing children gather around a table, share ideas and become completely absorbed in their play.

At Goodstart Flora Hill, experiences like these are thoughtfully created to give children opportunities to explore, create and learn alongside their peers.

Here our Toddler children are exploring playdough combined with natural loose parts, encouraging children to use their hands to manipulate, move and create. Using fine motor movements strengthens the hand muscles used for future writing and drawing, while also supporting children’s creativity, problem-solving, sensory exploration and language development.

But just as importantly, this creates opportunities for children to connect, collaborate and feel a sense of belonging within their learning environment. 🌱

Some of the biggest learning happens through the simplest moments during play. ✨
