DEECA Hume Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action - Hume region This page keeps you informed of DEECA's activities in the Hume region.

Our climate is changing and the effects are being felt around the world. Victoria has set an ambitious climate action agenda with a strong focus on establishing a renewable energy sector, reducing emissions and preparing for a future with less water. At the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action, we will lead this exciting work, bringing together the energy, environment, climate acti

on, water, agriculture and resources portfolios, in addition to its vital role in emergency management. We are working to meet strong targets to halve emissions by 2030 and reach net zero by 2050. We are rapidly progressing work to grow a strong renewable energy sector here in Victoria to support our solar, battery and offshore wind initiatives, ensuring that people have access to reliable and affordable energy. We are supporting our agricultural, water and resources sectors to adapt and become more resilient to the effects of climate change while driving sustainable production and economic growth. Victoria has an unmatched native landscape and we continue to work with Traditional Owners and other partners to protect and preserve it, ensuring a healthy, resilient and biodiverse environment. Bringing these portfolios into a single department allows us to draw on knowledge and expertise of these critical sectors and work together to deliver the Victorian Governmentโ€™s leading climate action and environmental protection agenda. Hume region stretches from Corryong and Barmah in the north to Marysville, Toolangi and Wallan in the south. Regional cities and centres include Wodonga, Shepparton, Wangaratta, Benalla and Seymour, with 12 local government areas. We value the comments and contributions we receive on social media. While we encourage people to join the conversation, we will not tolerate disrespectful, offensive, crude, hateful or irrelevant comments, or comments that make another person feel unsafe. Please keep all comments and discussion respectful and courteous. You can view our full social media policy on our website.

If weather and forest conditions are right, firefighters will light the following burns in the coming days:

๐Ÿ“Towong โ€“ Towong Bridge (0.2 hectares)

Without planned burning and other fuel management works, bushfires will be bigger and harder for our firefighters to control.

๐Ÿ”ฅYou may see or smell smoke.
๐Ÿ‘€ Watch for our crews and follow their directions.
๐Ÿ“ž If you experience symptoms that may be due to smoke exposure, please seek medical advice or call NURSE-ON-CALL on 1300 60 60 24.
๐ŸŒDetailed information about current air quality throughout Victoria can be found at www.epa.vic.gov.au

Unexpected weather conditions can mean plans change at the last minute and a burn may not go ahead, even if communities have already been notified. When this happens, our crews will continue to monitor the conditions and re-schedule the burn for a later date.

๐ŸŸ Back where they belong ๐ŸŸ

Macquarie perch and trout cod are swimming free again on Taungurung Country following an emergency rescue from Hughes and Seven Creeks, in the wake of the January 2026 Longwood bushfire.

The fish were cared for at the Victorian Fisheries Authority conservation hatchery at Snobs Creek before being released in collaboration with Taungurung Land & Waters Council, Parks Victoria and DEECAโ€™s Arthur Rylah Institute.

This work was supported through biodiversity recovery funding, jointly funded by the Australian and Victorian Governments under the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements.

Brrrโ€ฆ heading out? โ„๏ธ
With winter arriving with heavy snow, drivers are urged to stick to recommended detours and avoid state forest roads.
Following the recent closure of the Maroondah Hwy between Healesville and Narbethong, some people diverted through Toolangi State Forestโ€”putting themselves at risk, as shown in this clip.
The forest may look magical, but snow brings real hazards:
๐Ÿƒ Tree branches can bend and break
๐ŸƒDebris can cover roads
๐ŸƒConditions can change quickly

Before you go:
โœ… Check road and track closures and local conditions
โœ… Check the weather forecast
โœ… Download the VicEmergency app
โœ… Make sure your route suits your vehicle
โœ… Donโ€™t rely on phone coverage for navigation

Stay safe and plan ahead.

With favourable conditions this week, our crews will be taking the opportunity to conduct planned burns while the weather is stable. FFMVic will take advantage of these conditions to reduce the risk of future bushfire.
Thousands of private burn-offs have also been registered following the end of the Fire Danger Period in most parts of the state (except Glenelg).
Weather patterns can cause smoke to linger overnight and through to early morning. Smoke may be from multiple sources, including private burn-offs, and agricultural and interstate burns.
When air quality is impacted by smoke, everyone โ€“ especially those with heart or lung conditions, people with diabetes, people over the age of 65, infants, children and pregnant women โ€“ should reduce their time spent outside.
