Please follow advice of lifesavers, lifeguards and authorities this weekend, with hazardous conditions expected right along the coast.

// NSW beaches are set to be extremely hazardous from today, with large swell, damaging winds and waves over 5m expected along the coast. Conditions from the Hunter to the South Coast are unsafe for swimming, rock fishing and boating, with risks of coastal erosion and powerful rip currents.

Even once the swell eases, dangerous conditions will continue into the weekend. If beaches are closed, stay out of the water and do not put yourself or our lifesavers at risk.

Stay safe and stay informed.

As the school holidays wrap up and our lifeguard services scale back across many beaches, we want to remind everyone that your safety is still our number one priority. Fewer patrols mean it’s more important than ever to make smart choices when heading to the coast.

Before you dive in, remember these key safety tips:

• Visit a patrolled beach and only swim between the red and yellow flags
• Supervise children closely
• Avoid remote or unpatrolled spots
• Stay out of the water if you have been drinking
• Check BeachSafe for patrol times and conditions
• Download SharkSmart for drone patrol locations and safety updates

During the summer holidays, knowing how to stay safe in the ocean is vital.

Today, strong southerly winds are generating hazardous surf conditions along most of the New South Wales coast.

A Hazardous Surf Warning is current, including for Sydney, Wollongong, Newcastle, Coffs Harbour and Byron Bay. This means that surf and swell conditions may be hazardous for coastal activities such as rock fishing, boating, and swimming.

The Bureau has a range of services that provide information about waves. You can check the seas and swell section of the coastal waters forecast or look at the wave forecasts in MetEye. - Stay hydrated – bring plenty of water
- Seek shade when you can
- Swim between the flags and follow lifeguard advice.

// An extreme heatwave is moving down the coast today and tomorrow, with temperatures set to reach the mid thirties to low forties from the Hunter to the Shoalhaven. Big crowds are expected as people head to the beach to cool off, and lifesavers are urging everyone to stay alert around the water.

If you are going to the beach, make safety your priority. Visit a patrolled location, swim between the red and yellow flags, and follow the advice of our lifesavers and lifeguards. Remember to Stop. Look. Stay Alive.
