A win for all firefighters and their families!

Today, the Minns Government has made a historic announcement to expand presumptive cancer legislation to cover NSW firefighters for 10 more cancers.

This has come after months of campaigning by FBEU members across the state, pressuring politicians to recognise the dangers posed to firefighters by occupational cancers.

We're hitting the streets this Thursday evening from 6pm (16th October) to talk to YOU about home fire safety, providing:

With crews coming from across the Coffs Coast to support us, we're looking forward to replacing and installing smoke alarms in a room near you!

Today our station farewells Deputy Captain Trevor ‘Crazy Horse’ Sinclair.

Trev has clocked up 26 years of service to the Bellingen Community, with 16 of those years as Deputy Captain.

Whether you’ve met Trevor through the fire brigade, on a job site, around town (Diggers), or at the Graveyard during his playing days with the Bellingen Valley Dorrigo Magpies RLFC, you’ll have a story of his generosity, attention to detail, single mindedness and courage.

While we’re sad to see Trevor finish his watch with 221, we are all incredibly grateful for his years of service and leadership.

We’d also like to acknowledge and thank Trevor’s wife, Donna, for all her support. The partners and families of firefighters sacrifice a lot of time with their loved ones, pick up our slack when we disappear to go to a job, and keep supporting us despite knowing the risks of the job.

From all the past and current firefighters at 221, thank you Trevor!

Statistics reveal that almost half of all home fires are started in the kitchen and 43% of all fire fatalities

Last Thursday the team at 221 were first on scene at a small electrical fire in Gleniffer.

While the air conditioning unit was destroyed, some quick thinking from the homeowner helped ensure that this fire didn't spread.

When 221 arrived on scene:
☑️ We were told that the power to the unit had been isolated at the switchboard. For all fires, one of the first things our Officer In Charge does is turn off the power. The homeowner knew which circuit breaker this aircon was on, and turned it off. This simple action can drastically reduce the risk for firefighters and further fire, and once verified by our OIC, we got to work.

☑️ There was a towell draped over the air-con unit which was soaking wet and being hosed down in an effort to keep the fire limited to the aircon unit. This early work to try and cool and contain the fire to the aircon unit was another great step taken by the homeowner.

These kinds of actions might make the difference between saving a home from extensive damage. However, always assess the risks, and be as safe as possible. Life is always more important than property.
