Today is not only Jason's birthday, its also International Day for Biological Diversity, with the theme "Acting locally for global impact," which is right up Landcare's alley! You can find a local group to join here: https://www.bellingerlandcare.org.au/get-involved/local-groups/ In the meantime, here's a snippet for wildlife docco lovers, and all observers of nature, as we pass David Attenborough's 100th year on Earth

Happy 100th David Attenborough, and thanks for all you've done to encourage people to care for the Land.
"“We are at a unique stage in our history. Never before have we had such an awareness of what we are doing to the planet, and never before have we had the power to do something about that. Surely we all have a responsibility to care for our Blue Planet. The future of humanity and indeed, all life on earth, now depends on us.”

I kind of love Bellingen Shire Council's very straightforward grant reporting templates. I've been writing up the Environmental Levy Community Fund reports, and it's been great to remember how much volunteer labour is contributed to caring for public Land in our Shire, with a bit of assistance from Council. Here's a random selection of what the Bielsdown River Walk group has been up to, assisted by an ELCF grant to supplement their plantings, and help them maintain the paths to such a high standard for the public to enjoy. Join them for their annual Spring planting, or visit the site any time at the corner of Bangalow and Acacia Street. They are there working on Thursday mornings if you want to join in.

Our volunteers at Johnson Ave Mylestom can now go about their work protecting an endangered rainforest pocket more safely, with the removal of the last coral trees through a Bellingen Shire Council Environmental Levy Community Fund grant. Passers-by can find out more about the Wiinyjarr-wurunggam* site and how to get involved in protecting it from the sign that went up today.
Its a beautiful time of year to go for a walk around the forest and out to the beach, and perfect working bee weather! (8am Mondays).

We've posted about our involvement in supporting Grey Headed Flying Foxes before. Not only are they awesome in their own right, but they are great contributors to the economy:

Bats are often thought of as smelly, ugly and noisy, but a study has revealed the economic and ecological value of one Australian species's poo.

It's Easter (cassia) time. Take a short moment this long weekend to deal with it before the rounded pods mature and resurrect a whole bunch of little ones. It's easy to spot now too! Forget Easter egg hunts, Easter cassia hunts are all the rage now. Find out how to make sure you have the right plant, and how to control it here ... https://w**ds.org.au/profiles/cassia-easter-senna/

Beautiful morning at Bielsdown River Walk, the fruits of all the group's labour are evident everywhere, with the latest plantings framed by the well established plants from the early days. I think I slept in too late for the platypus.

After all the rain looks like a fine day for the plant fair, and for putting plants in the ground. Lots of wonderful native plant nurseries are setting up, along with fruit trees and all the rest! Drop by and pick our brains, and join Landcare to hear first about upcoming events and opportunities. Councils w**d officers are sharing our stall, so come and pick their brains too🙂
