Hello Beechworth,

🧡 OUR SES UNIT IS STILL WELCOMING NEW VOLUNTEERS! 🧡

This is your chance to join a small group of new volunteers who recently decided to get on board and go through training together!

Reasons to join:

- Your family comes first. Your job comes second. SES fits around life, not life around SES.

- Helping others makes you feel good. It is rewarding to give back to the community as part of a team.

- It is a stimulating challenge and welcome distraction from the daily grind.

Please reach out to us via email [email protected] - we are happy to answer all your questions to help you in making an informed decision.

You can also find more information and apply on the VICSES website here: www.ses.vic.gov.au/join-us

Can you see yourself in orange? 🧡

Find out more about volunteering with the VICSES Beechworth Unit at our Family Open Day and Volunteer Information Session:

- When: Sunday 29 March
- Time: 12.30pm-3.00pm
- Where: 1 Radcliffe Road, Beechworth

Meet some of our amazing members who are proving that balancing work, family, school and volunteering is possible!

- Samantha: Our Unit Controller and a working single mother studying nursing.
- Chris: Parent of young kids with work-related travel commitments and a big garden to tend to.
- Flynn: Our youngest member tackling Year 12.
- Ian: Our oldest member who is retired and keeping busy at the unit.

Here’s just some of the reasons our members love volunteering:

- 🫶 Helping others makes us feel good!
- 🧘‍♀️ We find purpose in volunteering with VICSES.
- 😀 It's a stimulating change and welcome distraction from the daily grind.
- 💤 We find it more exciting than TV shows.
- 📈 We gain experience which is transferable to day-to-day life - think first aid, being calm and focused, chainsawing, four-wheel driving, and much more.
- 🏆 Team work and being part of a like-minded group of good people.

While we’re at it, time for some myth busting…

🕓 Myth 1 - I am too busy for that!
At Beechworth Unit, you family comes first and your job comes second. VICSES fits around your life. We are realistic about your commitments and understand that everybody’s capacity is different.

🛠️⁉️ Myth 2 - I don’t have what it takes!
VICSES volunteers come from all walks of life and different backgrounds. We make sure you learn skills in a safe and supportive environment. No one at the Beechworth Unit is super-human, and we all started off as newbies with an appetite to learn more and give back to our community!

⁉️ Myth 3 - This is only something for men!
Incorrect! Did you know that across Victoria, 33% of VICSES volunteers are women? And did you know that Beechworth Unit has a female Unit Controller? It’s not all men - we especially encourage women to consider joining us.

The Beechworth SES Unit is sending best wishes and kudos to all our emergency services colleagues for their incredible effort to keep the Victorian community safe, and our thoughts are with community members who have been impacted by the fires currently raging through the state.

Whilst Beechworth SES is not actively responding to fires, yesterday, members did their part in keeping the community safe, responding to various call outs in and around Beechworth, clearing roads and driveways to ensure emergency access and exits on an extreme fire day. This also included the establishment of a safe diversion of traffic around fallen powerlines along the Beechworth-Stanley Road.

Whilst today, Beechworth experiences much needed cooler conditions, please stay vigilant around trees as they are still responding to heat stress, and trees or limbs may still drop.

Stay safe, Beechworth!
